Social and Community Inclusion

Here you will find information and activities that help promote and support young people's independence and inclusion in the community.

From the age of 16, you become responsible for making your own decisions. We shouldn’t assume that parents will make decisions on your behalf. The Children and Families Act 2014 states that local authorities must:

  • understand the importance of young people participating ‘as fully as possible’ in decision-making
  • provide information and support to assist their participation in decision-making

For more information about who can make decisions see the Mental Capacity Act.

We therefore aim to help you to live and participate fully in your community as independently as possible. We have a variety of transport services available in Cornwall to enable young people to engage in activities within the wider communities and there are many ideas on how to live independently at home, or when out and about, with the help of adaptations or special equipment.

It is just as important to be happy outside your home and it is so important to feel included in your community. We have lots of listings available to keep you busy, active and social.

For more information regarding discounted travel for those with disabilities, see Getting around.

Young People have the opportunity and support to have friends, relationships and be part of the community.  This is particularly important as they become more independent and rely less on the family and social networks they grew up with.  Friends and relationships are essential to quality of life as is being included in the local community and workplace.
