Diabetic and Endocrine Specialist Services
Cornwall Diabetes and Endocrine Specialist Services are based at CDEC, which is located next to the helipad behind the main RCHT site.
In addition to clinics for patients with diabetes, endocrine and lipid problems within RCHT, the department also carries out clinics in Penzance, Falmouth, Newquay, Bodmin and St Austell.
Patients can be referred for outpatient appointments by their general practitioner or practice nurse.
Recently bariatric surgery (obesity surgery) has been introduced at RCHT and medical assessment of these patients now takes place at CDEC by a specialist team including endocrinologists, surgeons, dieticians and exercise therapists.
A number of patients have specific problems which require input from several health professionals and attend specialist clinics at CDEC (Insulin Pump, Diabetes Ante Natal, Diabetes/Renal and Thyroid Eye Clinics.)
Recent exciting developments which will enhance patient care include the development of the Diabetes Research Team which is run by two specialist nurses with consultant support and provides the opportunity for patients to experience new therapies whilst involved in National and Multinational research programmes.
A dedicated diabetes cardiovascular nurse specialist and an endocrine nurse specialist are also based at CDEC and will help ensure patients with these problems, have the best evidence based treatment available.
If you are an inpatient with diabetes (10% of all inpatients have diabetes) and your diabetes is causing problems whilst you are in hospital, a dedicated team of diabetes nurses are available to help optimise diabetic control during your admission to ensure the best possible outcome and minimise the time you need to remain in hospital.
