Halwin Pre-School
Services and organisations that have the Local Offer flash have filled out inclusion information, meaning that they meet the needs of people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)
Our setting caters for children aged 2 to 4 in a wonderfully spacious environment, which encourages your child to free flow between the indoors and outdoors. The outdoor area has been thoughtfully designed with access to water, sand, physical equipment to climb and slide and plenty of large construction toys, all of which are aimed to provide a stimulating learning environment. Throughout this journey you will be supported by experienced staff, including a qualified teacher, who are all committed to providing quality education and care with exceptional family support.
We have a purpose built outdoor shelter and so play is not stopped when the weather is wet.
We have Forest School sessions running at times during the week.
You are welcome to attend pre-school at any time with your child and we actively invite you to share with us, and celebrate, your child's achievements - however big or small.

- How we support children transferring to school
We have excellent links with our local primary school and we work very closely with them during the summer term, building and fostering relationships. We have good links with the other schools around us and teacher's visit us to get to know their new pupils. Our children start making visits to their new reception class from the beginning of the summer term culminating in staying for lunch and playtime, which helps to reduce anxieties about starting a new school.
We take part in many of the school's events that are run throughout the year, linking with siblings and the local community.
Learning and development
- Specialist skills or training our staff have
As well as having a fully qualified teacher leading the setting, we have many years of experience behind us as well as highly qualified staff. We are trained in Makaton, behaviour management, Leuven Scales, Reggio training methods, first aid, safeguarding and child protection.
Staff regularly update their training to ensure that we offer the best possible service to the children and families who attend our provision.
- Support we offer regarding children's health and well-being
We believe that a child's health and well-being is vitally important to success and we support our children with a key person system, building attachments through continuity and getting to know our children well so that they can explore their environment securely and happily. Children are assessed using the Leuven Scales so that we can quickly determine when a child may need a little extra support.
Staff are required to attend any relevant training as well as presenting as role models. We teach children to become independent, confident, imaginative learners and help them to become aware of their place in our community.
- Ways we inform parents about how their child is being supported
We provide regular newsletters which informs parents/carers on what their children have been doing and are going to do. This is sent out electronically. We have half termly parent/staff progress meetings when we exchange information on their child's progress through the Foundation Stage and hopefully, receive feedback from parents to inform our planning. We use Tapestry which is an online Learning Journal that engages parents/carers with their children's learning on a more immediate level. We have an 'open door' policy to enable parents to talk about any concerns or share any WOW moments with the group. We encourage parents to come in and share their children's play and learning, share a skill or introduce us to the job that they do - building our children's aspirations.
- Our complaints policy
Any complaints would be dealt with as soon as possible by the Management, Head of school or Governors. Depending on the complaint it may be referred to Ofsted and any other relevant organisation.
Welfare
- Alterations we have made to make our building accessible
We have a ramp to access the building and a toilet suitable for wheelchair users.
- Facilities we have for personal care
We have a nappy changing facility. Small toilets and hand washing facilities.
- Specialist resources we have
We have a child friendly environment which all children can access be it outside or inside. Many sensory resources are available at all times and we are able to access specialist resources through Cornwall Council.
- How we include all children in activities, such as trips
We make sure we have lots of adult help - keeping above ratio and thoroughly risk assess every activity prior to visiting
