Budehaven Day Nursery has been providing a fun, secure, loving and happy learning environment for children aged 3 months to school age for over 20 years. Situated in an Eco building within Budehaven School grounds, the nursery employs 7 fully qualified nursery nurses who can care for 24 children in each session.
The interior of the nursery boasts a fresh and vibrant outlook and an array of equipment is provided to assist in the children’s learning and development. There are two rooms within the nursery, one for children under 3years and a Pre-school room 3 years +. Each room has access to an outside decked area to allow free-flow play indoors and outdoors. We also have a large outside play with fixed equipment and garden area to include opportunities for the children to plant and grow flowers and vegetables.
We are committed to providing high quality care and education for children aged 3 months to 5 years in a homely and caring atmosphere. We aim to create a positive, stimulating and happy learning environment through which all learners continually aspire to develop their potential to the full.

- Systems and strategies we have in place to identify children that may require additional support
Every child is allocated a Key Person to help support them through the settling-in experience but also to support their on-going needs, learning and development whilst at Nursery. Each member of staff will build strong relationships with all our children and families. During the first weeks of getting to know you and your child we will carry out observations as well as find out information from you in order to assess their starting points (Entry Level assessment). We will then plan activities specifically for your child according to their interests and Next steps. We carry out Termly reviews of the progress your child is making as well as a 2 year old progress check. These systems enable us to identify any additional support which may be required, we will discuss this with you and with your permission we can seek advice from outside agencies.
- How we identify and support children's learning and development needs
Our sessions provide a wide variety of open-ended play activities, together with more structured learning opportunities which support children's development across all areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage. Staff will spend quality time with the children supporting and extending their learning through interesting and challenging play based activities, which are geared towards each child's needs and interests. When additional support is required we will ensure activities are geared to your child's specific needs. We will follow advice from outside professionals and will use visual supports such as timeline routines, snack menus, now and next routines.

We work closely with local authority professionals and our locality Inclusion team. We also have links with a variety of outside agencies such as The Speech and Language Team, Family support, Paediatricians, Health and Social Care team, and Educational psychologists.
- How we support children transferring to school
We aim to make the transition process to school as smooth as possible for all children. We will invite the class teachers to come into the Nursery and a member of staff will accompany your child into initial taster days in their reception class. We use photos of their new teaching staff and environment within the Nursery. With parental permission we meet with the reception teacher to discuss each child's learning and development needs.

All our staff are highly experienced at working with children. The Nursery SENCO has attended a 2 day SENCO Induction Training. We attend regular SENCO Network meetings to ensure we keep our practice up-to date. Our team have also attended courses such Behaviour Management, Integrated Working and Visual Aid training.
- Support we offer regarding children's health and well-being
Your child's safety is our number one priority so we work hard to ensure we have an effective risk assessment system and daily checks in place. All of our staff have attended Safeguarding training and our Manager is our nominated Child Protection Officer. Both rooms within our nursery are carefully set out in order to provide areas for more active play as well as areas where children can go to relax and sit quietly if they wish to. We use small group-times as opportunities to discuss our feelings, keeping safe, being healthy as well as our rights and how we can respect the rights of others. We use resources such as puppets, stories, turn-taking games and reward systems to reinforce this learning. We offer a healthy cafe-style snack which includes a selection of fruit, with a savoury cracker or breadstick option and milk or water. We have hand-washing systems in place and encourage children to develop self-help skills such as pouring their own drinks and cutting their own fruit. We inform parents daily of their child's eating habits.

Effective partnership with parents is very important to us. We welcome all our families to come and speak to us at any time and we encourage you to share any news, achievements or concerns about your child with us. All children under the age of 2yrs have a home-liaison book which is a way for us to communicate with you your child's achievements as well as any practical messages and we welcome you to use it in the same way. We will also give you verbal feedback at every session about what your child has enjoyed doing that day. We provide parents with written information through our monthly newsletter, including suggestions of ways you can support your child's learning at home. We hold a parent's evening each Term to discuss your child's progress, next steps and their learning and development. We also have a parents notice board and information table.

We will give prompt and serious attention to any concerns you may have and will work together to resolve any problems. We follow statutory guidelines and our full complaints procedures are set out in our complaints policy which is included in our Nursery prospectus.

Our Nursery is accessible via ramps for wheelchair access. We also have disabled toilet facilities. Outside we have flat decking to enable easy access to our free-flow area.

We ensure that children have access to any equipment or resources necessary in order to support their individual needs and we endeavour to access extra resources where they are not already available. We have a variety of sensory equipment and visual aids. We provide books and toys which promote positive self-image.
- How we include all children in activities, such as trips
Local outings are always planned with the children in mind and specific resources will be factored in at the risk assessment stage, such as buggies, wheelchair, extra adults etc. We take an emergency bag with us every time we leave the building which contains general first aid equipment as well as any medication that children might need. Risk assessments, access plans and pre-visits are always carried out before visiting somewhere new.
