Video Interaction Guidance (VIG) Service Cornwall Council
Services and organisations that have the Local Offer flash have filled out inclusion information, meaning that they meet the needs of people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)

VIG is an intervention for parents/carers and their children where there are concerns about communication, interaction or the attachment relationship. Parents/carers will need to be available to work with the VIG guider and want help to try and improve the relationship between them and their child. The starting point of VIG work is the adults (and older children where relevant) being supported to identify their own goals - specifically what they want help with.

VIG aims to improve parental sensitivity and attunement through developing an understanding of how the child experiences the world. It highlights the strengths people already have and supports parents/carers to build on these. It helps them to progress from their individual starting point and work at a pace that supports them to learn. It can be helpful to people who find it hard to access support and learn in group situations.

A short clip of video is taken (approximately 10 minutes) of the interaction of those involved. This typically happens in the home. The video is looked at by the VIG guider who will pick out a small number of photos and clips showing positive interactions linked to the help that the parents / carers want. The VIG guider returns to share and discuss the clips.

How we make our service inclusive

We visit families within their homes and can therefore meet individual needs. Our work is person-centred and therefore we can adjust to meet individual needs.

Staff SEND experience

Staff delivering VIG have a range of experience of working with children with SEND. VIG for children with the most complex SEND is often delivered by Educational Psychologists.

How our service supports providers / schools / colleges

The VIG service does not work directly with providers, schools or colleges. The Educational Psychology Service does do some of this work as part of their core offer and can provide VIG to families and school staff as part of a Service Level Agreement (SLA) with a school.

Support at key transition points

If we are working with a family at a transition point then we can attend relevant meetings.
