Foundation Studies - Access to Community and Education

We welcome students with additional learning and support needs. Our range of courses will help you gain skills for personal progression, whether it be accessing mainstream education or developing independent living skills. Enjoy learning in a fun and supportive environment. 

Duration: Up to five years – full time or part time

Client Group: The course is designed for students with a range of learning needs including profound and complex disabilities, medical needs and severe learning disabilities.

Aims: A Multi Sensory curriculum developed to meet the individual needs of each student. ACE aims to offer Inclusive Education Programmes developed by working in partnership with families, carers and significant others.

Course Content: A sensory curriculum where students will follow one of two pathways, independent engagement or exploration of events.  The curriculum denotes its sensory focus integrating a plethora of sense specific sessions.

ACE Tutors incorporate a range of techniques to ensure that the learning style of every student is met.

Assessment and Coursework:

The ACE curriculum adheres to the National Open College Network (NOCN) qualifications in Personal Progress. Every student works towards achieving an ‘Award’ in their first year with the aim of progressing onto the qualification entitled ‘Certificate’ in the following years. In addition to their qualifications every student in ACE follows a learning plan developed after a time of initial assessment. Targets are developed within this plan on an individual basis and are reviewed on a termly basis.  All our subjects are cross referenced to the Foundation Learning Achievement Continuum and student achievement is assessed by tutors on an ongoing basis.

Progression and the Future:

The students may have the opportunity to access further education opportunities or other appropriate placement

Foundation Studies - Access Inclusive Learning

Duration: Up to three years

Client Group: This course is designed for students with a range of learning needs.  This may include students with moderate or severe learning difficulties.

Entry Requirement and Student Suitability: 

  • To develop individual skills through student-centred learning programmes
  • To develop independence and self esteem
  • To work towards sheltered employment or employment where appropriate
  • To develop communication and social skills
  • To improve basic skills in literacy, numeracy and ICT

Course Content:

The course is designed to meet individual needs, developing and building upon existing skills and will include the following curriculum areas:

Methods of Study:

Tutors take great care to ensure that each student experiences a wide range of teaching methods.  Students are assessed to establish their preferred learning styles and individual learning plans are devised to match these.

Assessment and Coursework:

The course is designed to encourage development and progression.  Students will be encouraged to achieve to their full potential, however it is recognised that there are great differences in individual ability levels and progress will vary accordingly.  Assessment through BSquared software managing progression through the National Curriculum.  The Gateway Award, recognising new experiences and building independence.

Progression and the Future:

On completion of the course students may progress onto a community work placement, sheltered employment or open employment

Foundation Studies - Edexcel BTEC Award/Certificate/Diploma in Vocational Studies/Skilled for Life

Entry 3

Duration: 1-3 years

Course Content: An innovative course offered at Entry 3 that provides students with the opportunity to experience a range of vocational sectors and learning experiences.  The qualification provides a progression route onto further education or work.  It is aimed at post 16 students who have not yet decided on a career, or those who need more qualifications to gain entry onto other courses.

The vocational units may include:

  • Business and Administration
  • Retail
  • Hospitality
  • Travel and Tourism
  • Art and Design
  • Media
  • Active Sport and Leisure
  • Land and the Environment

In addition to a Vocational or sector specific course, all students will follow qualifications in Personal and Social Development and Work Skills as well as Functional Skills in English, Maths and ICT.  Work placements will be available where appropriate.  Students may also follow elements of the acclaimed Forest School method of learning.

Course Structure

Three days in College with the option of a work placement for one day a week in some cases.  Alternatively, a block of work placement may be arranged.  Timetables will be negotiated to meet each student’s individual needs. 

Assessment/Course Work

All courses are assessed through a portfolio of evidence comprised of both internally and externally set assignments.  Assessments of practical competency, where needed, take place in Truro College and outside work placements.  The sector specific courses also require the student to complete on-line tests.  To achieve the Functional Skills qualifications students will take examinations, usually in the summer term.

Foundation Studies Access Skills Development (ASD) 

Duration: Three years - part time

Location: Tregye Campus, Carnon Downs (part of Truro College)

Client Group: A unique course for students on the Autistic Spectrum.  Some students use this course as the first step into College.  Students who maybe anxious of new places and people are able to be gradually introduced into a learning environment.

ASD is based on the key communication models of TEACHH, PECS and Makaton.  We offer a broad, integrated curriculum incorporating Basic Skills (literacy and numeracy), ICT, Art, Music, Dance, Sensory Learning and Life Skills.

Based in the quiet and scenic surroundings of Tregye at Carnon Downs, near Truro, we are equipped with a range of resources specifically designed for ASD learners; including safe, secure teaching rooms, a sensory room, kitchen with specialist cooking equipment and a range of sensory resources.

Course content: The course runs from a Monday to Friday, the subjects offered are:

Art and Craft
Information Technology
Work Experience
Sensory Integration
Life Skills

Methods of study

Students are assessed at the start of their programme through BSquared.  Students are given personalised timetables to ensure that the course is suited to their individual needs.  Achieveable termly targets are set and progress monitored on a daily basis.

Staff: Lessons are taught and supported by staff that have training and experience of working with adults with Autism.  Additional training is provided in PCS, Makaton and TEACCH.

Progression: Suitable students are able to access further subjects and lessons on other Foundation Studies programmes.
