I am an Ofsted registered childminder set in the St Keyne area with my husband, two children aged 6 and 8 and our pet cat Dusty and chickens, Chicken Licken, Nugget, Beaks and Lemmy! I am qualified to Level 3 CACHE in homebased childcare and have undertaken a peadiatric first aid course. I offer flexible childcare with drop off and pick up available to local Trewidland Primary School, where we will join in with toddler group on Tuesday afternoons. We will adventure around places such as Siblyback Lake and Cardinham Woods to discover the wonders of our countryside from the landscape to the creepy crawlies. There are also Bookstart Rhymetime sessions to entertain us at the local library plus much more fun to be had at the setting.

Learning and development

Systems and strategies we have in place to identify children that may require additional support

  • Settling in sessions can be arranged where we can slowing increase the amount of time and days to meet your requirements.

  • Parents may stay with their child at first or have short sessions so that the child can become familiar with the setting.

  • An initial discussion with parents will take place so that we can go through routines, any preferences and learning journey from a previous setting to ensure that I understand the childs needs.

  • I undertake an entry assessment of each child’s development to help me monitor their communication and language development along with other areas to help me plan next steps.

  • I will complete a 2 year review that will be provided to the parent/carer which can be shared with the Health Visitor when they carry out their review.

How we identify and support children's learning and development needs

  • At the setting there is currently 1 adult and 2 early years children during the week.

  • I share daily updates and observations via WhatsApp and at pick up. I provide written assessments including the 2 year old Progress Check to highlight any additional support that may be required.

  • I always like to discuss with the parents how the child is progressing at the setting and I will ask how they are at home. I encourage two way conversations so that the needs are being reached while in my care.

How we support children transferring to school

  • We do take the younger on the school run with take the older children. They get a feel for the routine and also get to see the building and playground setting.

  • Do you  read lots of stories and have positive discussions about school, photos of staff and premises?

  • We help and encourage children to practice skills such as being independent, going to the toilet and hand washing, getting changed and putting their own coat and shoes on as well as encouraging their confidence in asking adults for help.

  • I have up to date mandatory training in such as Paediatric First Aid, Safeguarding and Child Protection Level 2, Food Hygiene.

  • I regularly look at online CPD courses and venue based training opportunities that I attend to keep up to date and gain fresh ideas.

  • I will make sure that I have had the appropriate training to meet the needs of any particular child.

Support we offer regarding children's health and well-being

  • If there are particular health issues these will be discussed with parents/carers and any training required will be undertaken to fully understand the needs.

  • Routines will be discussed with parents to ensure they can be followed with regard to food/sleep and toileting.

  • We teach the children good hygiene practices from an early age help them understand why it is important to keep ourselves clean.

  • We encourage selfcare and independence by getting the copy us with things such as putting coats on, or shoes and showing the how to wash tier hands currently and allowing them to do it by themselves with supervision.

  • A sickness policy is provided in the parent pack that is emailed or provided in a paper form if required that also includes a poster from Public Health outlining exclusion periods for different illnesses that apply at the setting to reduce the risk of cross infection?

  • There is always fruit and milk available for snacks and water is available at all times.

  • We have a vegetable garden at the setting as well as pots with strawberries that the children will help to plant seeds for, water and harvest while learning how they grow and how to care for them. This will hopefully encourage the children to try new things as they helped to grow them.

  • I am aware of food allergens and have a poster on a notice board by the fridge with labels to quickly and easily identify danger foods.

  • We have a large outdoor space as well as a local park within a few minutes walk which provides the children with swings, slides and climbing frame. It also provides a great opportunity to talk about road safety, stranger danger, not to approach dogs, hygiene etc

  • When a child is upset or quiet I always to talk to the child to see if something has upset them and explain who talking about your feelings is good and can make you feel better while allowing someone to you help.

  • I regularly update my online safeguarding course to keep up to date and refreshed.

  • I routinely risk the setting and trip destinations assess. I check play equipment before children use it and inspect toys. We check the smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and explain to the children how to safely use items and equipment and explain any dangers.

  • I provide a home from home setting experience where all children feel part of the family and where they feel happy, relaxed and safe.

Ways we inform parents about how their child is being supported

  • I like to give parents an update at the end of their child’s day of how they have been and what activities they have been doing.

  • I send photos and details via WhatsApp of wow moments and how activities have been used to aid things such as fine motor skills.

  • I like to discuss with parents their childs’ development and their next steps and how I plan to aid them. I will also provide little reports up to 4 times a year.

  • All my policies have a review date which is generally yearly. A new copy will be sent to parent predominately via e-mail although a paper copy can be provided and parents will be asked to sign a new acceptance.

Our complaints policy

  • A copy the Ofsted parents’ poster with Ofsted contact details is displayed on my parent board located on at the front door.

  • A copy of my complaints policy is provided in my parent pack that can either be printed off you or emailed.

  • In my complaints policy and also at our initial meeting I would advise you that I would investigate all written complaints and inform Ofsted within 14 days and notify you of any outcomes/actions taken within 28 days

Access

Alterations we have made to make our building accessible

  • The setting is based in a bungalow with low steps to the front door.

  • There is parking on the road outside the setting and we are based on a quiet road to a dead end so there is very little traffic.

  • We would discuss what alterations would be need for individuals and would do our best to accommodate and make changes where possible.

Facilities we have for personal care

  • Bathroom is easily accessible as our setting is in a bungalow

  • We have a step to help children reach both the toilet and sink

  • Single use washable hand towels and an automatic hand dryer is available. Both the toilet and the tap have a senor to reduce unnecessary contact.

  • The changing mat is disinfected after each use, hands are washed before and after changing and gloves are also available to use.

  • We have travel cots with individual single use washable bedding for sleeps.

Specialist resources we have

  • We have a good range of toys aimed at different ages, including books that cover various subjects.

  • We have a range of toys that are tactile, brightly coloured and musical for a variety of ages.

How we include all children in activities, such as trips

  • I provide activities adapted to include all ages and abilities.

  • I risk assess trips so that all children attending my setting can be included and their needs met including parking, access, toilet facilities are appropriate.

  • All trips and activities outside of the setting will be discussed in advance with parents and children so they aware and we can plan together and discuss any concerns.

  • I have 7 seater Vauxhall Combo Life complete with isofix of the 3 seats in the middle row.

  • I have aged related car seats, pushchairs and reins and will discuss with parents the child seats available to check that they match weight of child etc.

  • There are sometimes trips arranged with fellow childminders and the relevant risk assessments, permissions and discussions with parents will be carried out.
