Take 3 is an evidence based course in two parts for parents of young people aged between 12 and 16. It was originally developed to support parents of at-risk or vulnerable young people whose challenging behaviour was causing problems for parents and/or the community, though it can be used with any group of parents. Part one is a basic course of 10 “core” units, and part 2 has 10 optional sessions focusing on specific issues. The “Three” of the title refers to the three vital elements of effective parenting:
- Self Care
It also refers to breathing techniques that the course teaches to help a parent stay calm in stressful situations.
- Introductions – why are we all here?
- What’s adolescence?
- Encouraging young people
- The power of listening
- Misbehaviour and listening
- The four styles of parenting
- Taking stock, “I” statements and boundaries
- Negotiating boundaries and consequences
- When adults disagree - more negotiation practice
- Saying goodbye and moving on
Additional sessions can be added according to parents needs, and include specific topics like talking about drugs and alcohol, step families, sex and relationships.
