Play Therapy offers children to "play out" their negative feelings and experiences, which is the most natural dynamic and self-healing process in which children can engage.

Play therapy is defined as a dynamic interpersonal relationship between a child and a therapist trained in play therapy procedures who provides selective play materials and facilitates the development of a safe relationship for the child to fully express and explore self (feelings, thoughts, experiences, and behaviours) through the child's natural medium of communication, Play.

Toys are used as words by children and play is their language this helps children to make sense of their world, helps them to process their thoughts and feelings in a safe environment without any judgments imposed on them, freedom to be themselves to empower themselves to make choices which can increase their self-esteem, children use play to communicate at their own level and at their own pace. Play therapy can improve the emotional well-being of children. It may be used to alleviate mild emotional or psychological problems that are preventing a child from functioning to their full potential.

Children express themselves more fully and more directly through self-initiated spontaneous play than they do verbally because they are more comfortable with play.

Sessions are can be held at a private location during the weekends, early evening or - with permission - at the child's school/nursery. It is recommended that sessions are between 6 to 12 as a minimum guideline each session lasting 45 minutes.

How we make our service inclusive

I am able to work within the child's place of school or nursery.  I have access to a private room with lift access.

Staff SEND experience

I treat each child individually and will work with parents/carers, referrers and other professionals to ensure the child is physically and emotionally able to engage with myself and the play therapy toolkit.  

How our service supports providers / schools / colleges

My service enables children to be able to express their feelings and emotions, feel heard and accepted, provide ways to overcome negative assumptions and unhealthy ways of expressing themselves.  These actions remove barriers to accessing their education and help children build more positive relationships. 

Support at key transition points

I am aware vulnerable children become more anxious and frightened during key transition points, I try to ensure my sessions continue to run at the same time every week to maintain a trusting and reliable relationship where the child feels safe and secure.  When my sessions end with a child we have a clear countdown procedure.  I will convey my reluctance to end sessions to the referrer if I feel the child has not built up enough resilience to be able to cope with the ending of play therapy.

I am affiliated with Play Therapy UK who are regulated by the Professional Standards Agency.  I adhere to a strict Ethical Code of Practice and I receive clinical supervision from a more experienced member of PTUK.  I can be found on the PTUK register  Complaints can initially be made to myself, where an amicable solution will be sought.  If a complaint needs to be taken further then please contact PTUK at:
