Services and organisations that have the Local Offer flash have filled out inclusion information, meaning that they meet the needs of people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)

Hello and Welcome to Rookery Nook Childminding. I am an Ofsted registered childminder in Fraddon and I was graded Good on my last inspection. Ofsted commented that 'children are motivated and challenged as they play by a skilful childminder. The children are constantly engaged in purposeful play. They laugh and smile as they take part in activities with the support of the childminder. Children form secure relationships with a welcoming and friendly childminder'.

I have worked in early years for 17 years and have managerial experience from running a preschool. I have BA hons degree in Early years and this has developed my reflective skills. I love supporting children's early education and helping them reach their next steps. Over the years i have worked hard developing good relationships with children, parents and other professionals. I have SEN experience and have supported children to reach their full potential. I have completed specific training to help me in this role such as Makaton and attended a making sense course which supports my understanding of sensory needs.  My key attributes include hardworking, caring and passionate, patient and a good listener. I am also part of the untangled support network helping families with post natal anxiety and depression.

My Setting

I have purpose built playroom which is set up to encourage children to access resources independently. I have a lovely role play corner with wooden kitchen, pretend food and various dressing up clothes including different occupations.  I change the role play area to reflect children's interests such as a post office, shop, doctors or vets. My resources include puzzles, games, small world such as trains, cars, animals, dolls house, ponies, treading activities, handmade maths and literacy resources, puppets, musical instruments and scarves, sensory resources and treasure baskets. I have various constructions resources such as wooden blocks, mega blocks and stickle bricks. I have a good selection of books to cover various ages. To support children's creativity I have junk modelling, painting, drawing, colouring, and crafty items available. I have a little tent in the playroom for the children to share stories and have some quiet time. My garden is safe and secure for the children to play and learn. There is a rookery behind my garden creating shade for the children in the summer. The children also enjoy seeing the rooks nesting in the rookery and watching the farmer plough his field from the garden. To support children's understanding of the world we do gardening, growing flowers and fruit. We do cooking activities and learn about healthy eating. We are regularly out in the community going to parks, gardens, beach, Eden, museums and groups etc.

If you have any questions and want to arrange a visit to see my home please message me.

Languages spoken

I speak English but I am trained in Makaton (foundation level) to support children's early communication. I learn new signs weekly with them. I also support children's additional languages and work closely with children and parents to incorporate their languages in my setting. It is important for children to speak English but also support their own cultural and language as well. I would obtain talking books in different languages and learn a few phrases in their language to help them feel welcome and valued.

Early Years Local Offer response

Learning and development

Systems and strategies we have in place to identify children that may require additional support

Once a child starts the parents fill out an all about form and I ask them information about their child's development and if they have any concerns. I will also obtain health visitor information and build that relationship to support children's development and learning. I will add the 2 year check in the red book for the health visitor to see how the child is progressing. I will also work very closely with parents on how best to support their child if they have an additional needs.

How we identify and support children's learning and development needs

I complete weekly observations and refer to the Early Years foundation stage to see how the child is developing. I can also refer to the developmental journal to see how a child is developing. I will add observations in their journey books for parents to view. I will plan activities weekly to support children learning and development and see how they are progressing. I complete termly reports and complete a 2 year check for children from 2- 3 years attending my setting. If I have any concerns I will speak to the parents and show them my observations. If parents are happy I will seek further professional input on how to support their child to reach their full potential. I will also set up an IEP (individual education plan) to work towards specific targets supporting their child's learning.

Links we have to other agencies

I am confident in the referral process and know which porfessionals to work with such as the early years inclusion service, speech and language therapist, occupational therapist, Area SENCO, psychologist and the children centres.

How we support children transferring to school

I will work closely with the school the child is attending. I will arrange a visit for me to see the school and take photographs to show the child. I will invite the teacher to come and visit my setting and meet the child. I will have an example of the school uniform and resources to help with any worries or anxieties. I will also have copies of any reports for the teacher to see to help understand the child's learning and development. If the child has additional need I will send a copy of their IEP and work with the Area SENCO to help create a smooth transition.

Welfare

Specialist skills or training our staff have

It is important to keep up to date with relevant training. I have completed my level 3 safeguarding training, food hygiene level 2, pediatric first aid training, Makaton training to support children's communication, SEN training to support children with additional needs. I have also Making Sense training that supports my understanding of children with sensory needs.

Support we offer regarding children's health and well-being

Each child is unique and i have to support them individually. Children have their own culture at home and i have to learn about them. I like to find out who is important in their lives and learn about each child for example what are their interests etc supporting their well-being. My key ethos is promoting children's independence and i ensure my setting supports this. I have a downstairs bathroom so children can go to the toilet and wash their hands independently. They have their own individual hooks in the cloak room so they can hang their coats up. My resources are accessible for children so the can choose their own toys/activities independently. We grow our own fruit and vegetables in the garden. We do cooking activities and children learn about healthy eating. We do physical outdoor activities such as going to the park and walks and playing in the garden. For indoor physical activities we do dancing, bubbles and playing with a ball/balloon. We have books that support children to learn about being healthy.

Ways we inform parents about how their child is being supported

Communication is very important with parents as they are the child's first educator. Parents know their child best. I share weekly newsletters about activities and resources with parents. I share journey books with them showing the child's development. I share a daily diary about the child such as what they have eaten, what they played with etc. Parents are welcome to borrow any books or resources to support their child at home. I do weekly observations and termly reports to show how they child is progressing.

Our complaints policy

I follow Ofsted guidelines regarding my policy on complaints. I email each parent my complaints policy and if they have any problems to please come and speak to me. I have the Ofsted poster for parents on my notice board and i make parents aware of it and explain if they have any concerns to phone that number.

Access

Alterations we have made to make our building accessible

My setting is very accessible and i have a ramp up to my front door. I have a large driveway for parents to park when dropping off and picking up.

Facilities we have for personal care

I have a downstairs bathroom for children to use the toilet and wash their hands independently. It has a soap dispenser and individual paper towels. I have a toddler step for smaller children to use the toilet or sink. I provide individual bedding for each child when they sleep. If children bring a toothbrush i follow their individual care routines set by parents.

Specialist resources we have

I have sensory resources for children such as a sensory basket, sensory bottles, treasure basket and other resources for messy play and exploring. I will also obtain specialist books to support individual children and their cultures. If needed i would obtain specialist equipment to support children's individual needs.

How we include all children in activities, such as trips

Each child is unique and i need to reflect at the time to ensure my practice is inclusive. If a child needed specialist equipment to partake in an activity then i would speak to the early years inclusion team for advice. As a childminder you will work a broad age range and you have to plan activities that can include all your children so no child is left out.
