Boskenwyn Primary School
Services and organisations that have the Local Offer flash have filled out inclusion information, meaning that they meet the needs of people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)

Our delightful school was founded in 1877 to serve the local farming communities of three parishes.   We sit on the Downs above Gweek, amid open, rural coutryside.  Dhildren join us from their Reception year.  All of our amazing staff, governors and parents/carers work closely together to provide a safe and happy environment for all where children thrive,  and all strive to be the best they can be.  Our main aim is to educate the whole child, develop lively enquiring minds, and develop a love for learning for life.  Mental health and Wellbeing is central to all we do - feeling safe and happy is the foundation of learning and success.

Since July 2015, we have been federated with Germoe School, near Praa Sands. This has provided much wider opportunities for all of our children, staff and parents.

Notes

Boskenwyn consists of a Victorian building which houses the Y5/6 class, kitchen and offices.  There are a further three classrooms, playground, green space and designated classroom outdoor spaces for each of the classes.

Most children come to school by car, but some also walk or cycle from Gweek or Trewennack.  Car sharing from more distant local villages is also arranged and used by parents.  We have a staff car park, and there is road parking around the school.

Staff SEND experience

We have an experienced teaching and support staff, and a teacher and at least one TA are assigned to each class.  The class teams work collaboratively to ensure children's needs are well met, academically, socially and emotionally.    Staff are experienced in all areas of need, and further support is available from outside professionals:

Cognition and Learning eg dyslexia; dyscalculia; memory and processing difficulties

Communication and Interaction - eg Autism; Speech, Language and Communication Needs

Social, Emotional and Mental Health - eg Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder, Anxiety

Physical and Sensory - eg  Developmental Coordination Disorder; Sensory integration

We also have the option to draw on expertise of other professionals eg Educational Psychologist, School Mental Health Practitioner and others via the Early Help Hub, Cornwall's referral hub for schools.

We offer pastoral and family support via our 'Supporting Parents and Children Emotionally' and via parental drop ins, Parent Governor meetings and other supportive initiatives throughout the year.

Support at key transition points

The best transitions are well supported ones - all children experience some form of managed transition.  Early and enhanced transitions are used for children with additional needs, so that they have additional time to process up-coming change, and are able to experience the change gradually.  Safety and trust are important aspects in transitioning to a new setting, and we work with nursery schools and secondary schools, to ensure children are familiar with the adults they are transitioning to, and that relationships start to be built before change happens.  These transitions involve parents too.

Resolving disagreements, mediation and making complaints

Complaints and processes are set out in our school policies, all of which can be accessed via our school website.
