Barnicoat, Susan
Services and organisations that have the Local Offer flash have filled out inclusion information, meaning that they meet the needs of people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)
I have been an Ofsted Registered Childminder since 2002 and have been graded Outstanding and Good by Ofsted. I have Child Protection, Paediatric First Aid, Food Safety and Food Allergy Certificates alongside many certificates relevant to delivering the Early Years Foundation Stage. I have a Mental Health Certificate, Degrees in Childhood & Youth Studies and Early Years and a Masters Degree in Education.
I work with my husband Deryck, who is also an Ofsted Registered Childminder, together we are Three Smiles Childcare. We have 3 young adult sons of our own and have looked after approximately 100 children of all ages and abilities. We are both members of PACEY - the Professional Association for Childcare and Early Years.
We have a deep understanding of the Early Years Foundation Stage. We use each child's individual interests to support their learning effectively. We have an extensive range of toys and open-ended resources for heuristic play indoors and outside so that children are happily occupied and learning all the time they are with us. We provide a calm environment where children can be happy and confident, eager to explore their own ideas and ready to have a go at new things. Where possible we take children out to explore parks, woodlands, beaches and playgrounds where they can develop their physical skills and interact with the world around them.

Early Years Local Offer response
- Systems and strategies we have in place to identify children that may require additional support
When children join our setting, we consult with parents. We record any known additional needs and any concerns that the parents may have about their child's progress alongside details of the child’s interests and care needs. We read any records parents would like to share with us about their child's progress at previous settings.
- How we identify and support children's learning and development needs
I use the Early Years Foundation Stage and Development Matters as a basis for observations and assessments and I consult parents about what the child does at home so that we can identify and support any additional needs together. I discuss observations with Deryck, my co childminder, and I draw on my extensive knowledge of child development acquired through many relevant Open University courses including my Early Years Degree and Advanced Diploma in Child Development.
- Links we have to other agencies
We are members of several parents, carers and childminder support groups where we can find support, information about additional needs and signposting to any agencies that may be relevant. Our PACEY membership also provides us with information and support. Deryck and I will work with any agencies such as speech and language therapists and local area sencos as neeeded. We have supported a family to acccess assessment for a child and attended an assessment appointment with them. I have provided families with reports for PIP.
We are happy to liaise with any other agencies as required.
- How we support children transferring to school
Children are supported as required to meet their individual needs. Children are supported to be able to use the toilet and wash their hands independently. We help children to be able to put their own shoes and coat on and to carry their own bag. We encourage children to develop a 'can do' attitude and to 'have a go' at new activities. This supports their resilience, confidence, and ability to deal with new situations. We encourage good social skills which will help children to be able to make new friends at school.
We are happy to share information with the school - with parental permission.
Learning and development
- Specialist skills or training our staff have
Child Protection, Paediatric First Aid, Channel General Awareness, and Preventing Female Genital Mutilation. Senco: Behaviour Management Certificate. Inclusion Conference: The Right Support for Every Child Certificate. Open University Understanding Autism. Degrees in Childhood and Youth Studies and Early Years. Advanced Diploma in Child Development. Masters Degree in Education.
Experience of looking after children with a range of additional needs including autism, dyslexia, dyspraxia, and global developmental delay. We have also looked after children who are in the care of the local authority and fostered with relatives.
- Support we offer regarding children's health and well-being
Parents are given extensive details about how we support children's health and well being.
- Ways we inform parents about how their child is being supported
We inform parents about how their child is being supported verbally in person, and/or via social media, email, daily diaries or telephone as required, often supported by photographs that show the child's interests and progress.
- Our complaints policy
Parents are given our policy on complaints and are invited to let us know if they are unhappy about anything or can make suggestions for improvement. Should parents wish to complain about our childcare provision we ask them to contact us in the first instance. We will investigate the complaint, take any necessary action and inform parents of the outcome of our findings within 28 days. Records of such complaints will be retained for our records indefinitely and will be made available to Ofsted should they request them. Parents who are dissatisfied with our response can contact Ofsted - Ofsted will expect parents to have contacted us first. Ofsted contact information is provided to parents and the Ofsted poster with their contact details is displayed.
Welfare
- Alterations we have made to make our building accessible
There is a wheelchair friendly slope to our front door which has a dropped threshold. The downstairs toilet is too small for a wheelchair to turn round. There is a step down to the garden and a step up to the lawn.
- Facilities we have for personal care
Downstairs toilet. Upstairs toilet, shower and bath. We use high quality changing mats that have no grooves or creases therefore they can be cleaned effectively. We sanitise them with antibacterial wipes after every use.
- Specialist resources we have
We have lots of sensory toys including dark den, tunnel, uv lights, glow in the dark resources, infinity light, toys that light up, light panel, toys that make noise, textured mats, textured balls.. too many to list. The majority of our resources are open-ended and can be played with in any way that suits a child which supports their individual learning.
- How we include all children in activities, such as trips
We organise trips that meet the needs of all attending.
