Energy Wise is our Big Lottery funded advice project which aims to help vulnerable households escape from the misery, anxiety and ill-health caused by fuel poverty.
The three-year project started in January 2018. Through the provision of specialist advice and support to householders to reduce their energy costs and maintain healthy indoor temperatures and humidity levels, over the next three years it will help 4,000 households stay warm in the winter, prevent damp and mould and avoid summer overheating.
The main project activities will be based on Community Energy Plus’s innovative HAHA approach. The HAHA methodology delivers support to homes struggling with the costs of energy through in-Home Advice, Hand-holding and Advocacy. We aim to assist more than 800 households who are experiencing the greatest challenges using our fulltime Energy Wise Caseworkers.
Why is Energy Wise needed?
Cornwall has higher than national levels of fuel poverty due to low incomes, older housing stock and a lack of access to mains gas. We know from the services we provide that vulnerable people are going without heating or getting into difficulty with energy bills despite the existence of multiple services, schemes and self-help solutions. The key underlying reasons for this are a lack of life skills in home energy management and a lack of ability to access to services and grants that can help to address root causes such as the poor thermal quality of their housing or high levels of damp or condensation.
Meeting the need
Energy Wise will enable Community Energy Plus to provide a targeted support service to tackle the deeper issues that are creating fuel poverty in Cornwall. It aims to build on work we have delivered through the award-winning Winter Wellbeing network and the Big Lottery funded Warm Me Up projects.
