Strawberrys Day Care Pre-School
Services and organisations that have the Local Offer flash have filled out inclusion information, meaning that they meet the needs of people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)

At Strawberrys Pre-school we understand that children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates. We consider the individual needs, interests, and stage of development of each child in our care, and use this information to plan a challenging and enjoyable experience, which is delivered through adult-led and child-initiated activities. Each child has an assigned key person whose role is to help ensure that every child’s learning and care is tailored to meet their individual needs. At the end of the session your child’s key person will be available to discuss your child’s day.

Our Pre-school is for children aged from three years until they start school. Children normally start full time at infant school the September following their fourth birthday. This is called the reception year.  When your child is ready to start school we can arrange for their teacher to visit them at Strawberrys. This is a good time for us to share your child’s Learning Journey with their new teacher helping to provide your child with a smooth transition into school.

Under the governments early years programme all three and four year olds are entitled to 15 hours free education from the term following their third birthday until they start school. A part time place is up to 15 hours a week for 38 weeks a year.

Early Years Local Offer response

Learning and development

Systems and strategies we have in place to identify children that may require additional support

The manager oversees the educational programmes to ensure staff consider children's individual needs, interests, and how children learn. A mix of indoor and outside adult-led and child initiated activities that are challenging and enjoyable experiences for each child are planned and cover seven areas of learning and development. Staff promote children's learning and development in partnership with parents and carers and with the support of other professionals when needed, this ensures children's individual needs are acknowledged and that children make good progress.

How we identify and support children's learning and development needs

Ongoing assessment is used to plan children's next steps in learning and used to monitor each child's progress. Summative assessments are updated routinely which highlight whether the child is developing as expected for their age and stage of development.

Links we have to other agencies

Effective partnerships have been formed with external agencies, that help to secure appropriate interventions for children to receive the support they need; such as, early years inclusion team, Health visitors,   family support workers, speech and language therapists, social care workers, Child Development Centre practitioners and child psychologists.

How we support children transferring to school

When children leave our setting and move on to school, activities such as, The Hungry Caterpillars Journey, teaches children about change and new environments. Arrangements are also made for the children's new teacher to visit them at Strawberrys. When extra support is needed the key person will attend transition meetings and go to settling in sessions with children.

Welfare

Specialist skills or training our staff have

All staff have a shared understanding and responsibility of how to protect children and attend regular training to continuously develop their practice in safeguarding and other training that is relevant to their individual needs such as, Special educational needs, makaton, visual training, how to manage children's behaviour, anaphlaxis, food safety and health and safety.

Support we offer regarding children's health and well-being

Strawberrys key person system ensures that every child's learning and care is tailored to meet their individual needs. Every child is assigned a key person and parents are informed of who their child's key person is during the registration process. Strawberrys focus child system aims to help children develop a positive sense of themselves, to form good relationships with peers and, to be happy and enjoy what they are doing. Strawberrys team has worked hard to obtain a level 5 in Cornwall's healthy under 5's programme and uses the support materials  to educate children and families about healthy eating and exercise and, and the positive impact this can have on children's growth, behaviour and long term development.

Ways we inform parents about how their child is being supported

Parents are informed through verbal discussion, email, telephone, meetings and on Tapestry.  Progress is discussed with parent/carers routinely during open days. A Care diary is used to write about a child's day and translators are used for those parents who do not speak English when needed.

Our complaints policy

Our setting believes that children and parents are entitled to expect courtesy and prompt, careful attention to their needs and wishes. We welcome suggestions on how to improve our setting and will give prompt and serious attention to any concerns about the running of the setting. We anticipate that most concerns will be resolved quickly by an informal approach to the appropriate member of staff. If this does not achieve the desired result, we have set procedures for dealing with concerns. We aim to bring all concerns about the running of our setting to a satisfactory conclusion for all of the parties involved.
