Little Minnows Nursery
Services and organisations that have the Local Offer flash have filled out inclusion information, meaning that they meet the needs of people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)
Little Minnows is a family owned nursery in the Heart of Truro. Our vision is to provide a home from home environment in which children aged 3 months to five years can thrive and grow whilst learning through play.
Little Minnows is a friendly, welcoming and inclusive setting, we offer a caring, stimulating and nurturing indoor space. We benefit from a large enclosed garden with a multitude of areas to be explored, whether during child-led or adult-led activities, your little ones will love the sense of freedom and adventure.
As a family run nursery we appreciate the challenges of balancing work and family life and we understand the need to be assured that your child is in safe nurturing hands whilst they are in our care.
We want your child to feel safe, secure and happy so that they can benefit from a wide range of activities provided by our highly qualified team of practitioners. We believe that this Foundation Stage is vital to underpinning your child’s happiness and success in the rest of their learning journey.
Our rooms
At Little Minnows all our rooms try to keep to a routine that children recognise and anticipate. A familiar routine helps to ensure your child feels happy and secure, we are committed to inclusion and meeting children’s individual needs. The spacious property allows us to deliver appropriate environments for all ages and levels of development. Little Minnows is divided into four generously staffed rooms.
Minnows
Age 3 to 12 months
Our young babies are cared for by our dedicated and fully qualified team. Their room is clean and light with a variety of sensory resources that boosts their awareness of the world around them. They have a separate sleep room with wooden cots and a calm atmosphere to ensure they get the restful sleep they need. We will endeavour to match and follow your baby’s home routine in order to smooth their transition into our setting.
Tiddlers
Age 12 to 24 months
Our older babies have a large space to crawl, cruise and explore. The resources here are focussed on guided discovery and heuristic play to kindle an inquisitive mind. Our excellent nursery staff support the children’s language development with singing, stories and plenty of verbal games to encourage plenty of imitation and conversation.
Nippers
Age 2 to 3 years
Children in the Nippers room are actively encouraged to learn through play, to build positive relationships and begin to develop a sense of independence in exploring the world around them. We make sure there is plenty of outdoor play come rain or shine as well as painting, sensory play, mark making and construction to keep them busy and to help develop their creativity and movement skills. We encourage the children to make choices and begin to develop skills for their own independence.
Schoolies
Age 3 to 5 years
Our pre-school children benefit from two large rooms as they gradually prepare for school. One having a creative focus with art and craft materials and the other a more homely feel. Thus allowing your child to feel comfortable whether they are feeling inspirational or reflective. Both rooms have free-flow access to our large garden and it’s more explorative and adventurous areas to encourage your child’s independence.

Early Years Local Offer response
- Systems and strategies we have in place to identify children that may require additional support
We believe early identification is essential to support the child and their family. The staff at Little Minnows will monitor each child's progress with regular reports and assessments allowing time to identify any areas of concern. Staff will refer any concerns to the SENCO who will liaise with parents and support agencies to ensure the child is fully supported.
- How we identify and support children's learning and development needs
We identify and support children's learning and development through regular monitoring and assessment and by communication with parents and other professionals that we know could help the child.
- Links we have to other agencies
We have strong links with other agencies and will quickly implement a support package to suit each child and their individual needs.
- How we support children transferring to school
We liaise with the school and other agencies to ensure a smooth transition for the child and their family. We also provide books and stories about starting school and have PE sessions , where the children are asked to bring in a PE kit to change into, to get used to dressing and undressing themselves.
Learning and development
- Specialist skills or training our staff have
Carly is a fully trained teacher, B Ed (Hons).
- Support we offer regarding children's health and well-being
We encourage healthy eating, emotional well-being and self-confidence through forming strong bonds with the children and their families. We have also registered with Cornwall’s Healthy Under 5s and Sugar Smart.
- Ways we inform parents about how their child is being supported
Regular meetings and an open door policy as well as constant communication and parental observations on EyLog, our online tool for communicating with parents and carers. We also have trembly parents evenings for Nippers and Schoolies so you can come in, see your child in the setting and speak directly to the team.
- Our complaints policy
We believe communication is the key to resolving issues and complaints at the earliest opportunity. Please speak to your child’s Key Worker or Room Leader in the first instance. If for some reason the issue cannot be resolved at this level then you should approach the management team.
Welfare
- Alterations we have made to make our building accessible
There is an access ramp to the front of the building.
- Facilities we have for personal care
We have discreet changing areas and through regular training, staff are aware of the procedures involved in attending a child's personal care.
- Specialist resources we have
We have a sensory tree and lots of sensory toys for the children to explore, quiet areas both inside and outside and staff who are well trained to cater for specialist needs.
- How we include all children in activities, such as trips
We ensure there are thorough risk assessments in place and enough staff/parents/helpers to ensure the children's safety at all times.
