Sensory Shopping at White River Place - St Austell
Services and organisations that have the Local Offer flash have filled out inclusion information, meaning that they meet the needs of people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)

White River Place understands that for some people with autism spectrum conditions, sensory or additional needs, a visit to a shopping centre can be a daunting experience.

At White River Place we have introduced Sensory Shopping Days. The aim of the ‘SENSORY SHOPPING DAY’, is that it will be a day when the Centre enables shoppers with autism spectrum conditions, sensory or additional needs to access and use the Centre in a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere.

We have pre chosen 7 dates in 2019 for Sensory Shopping, they are as follows:

For us to ensure that we have the best impact, we have asked retailers to come on board with us to make sure that Sensory Shopping Days are the best experience possible. This will include dimmed lighting, no or reduced volume instore music and a minimum of PR announcements as well as where possible and the de-cluttering of aisles. We are also going to provide a ‘quiet zone’ area in the Centre, where shoppers can go if they feel anxious when possible. The location of the ‘quiet zone’ will communicated to retailers before each ‘Sensory Shopping Day’.

How we make our service inclusive

The detailed guide to White River Place has been produced with the purpose of informing those individuals with autism and their parents/ carers about the Centre and to help them have an enjoyable visit.

In addition, we have created an easy read visual guide to White River Place specifically for individuals with autism spectrum conditions (ASC). If you, or the person you are visiting White River Place with, has ASC you may want to download that guide instead. The guide includes an easy read map of White River Place.

If you want you can use our autism awareness cards.

  • The cards are for you to use if you want to tell staff or shoppers about your autism.
  • They can be downloaded from our website at

If you need any help ask any White River Place member of staff. White River Place staff who operate White River Place receive specialist training on autism awareness and will be happy to help you.
