We are inspected by Ofsted and use the new EYFS curriculum.
We are situated in a semi-rural location within the grounds of a popular primary school in a purpose built building. Our staff are highly trained and our Senior team have many years experience.
In our outside area we have a garden which we use to plant and grow various vegetables and flowers throughout the year. We also have a large sand pit with a tarmacked area for water play. In addition to this we now have a grassed area for story telling, mud kitchen & den building. We have recently included an all natural area in our top garden with a wooden climbing frame and wooden playhouse. We also have a permanent fire pit in this area where we teach the children about fire safety and enjoy eating around the fire pit in small groups. We have access to the School playgrounds and sports field. We achieved a Good in our last Ofsted inspection.

- We cater for all diets and work closely with Parents to support and provide for children with special dietary needs. We provide a healthy snack during each session and run a lunch club between 12 and 12.30 for all children who wish to attend. The children provide their own lunch and this is supervised by a staff member.

Early Years Local Offer response
- Systems and strategies we have in place to identify children that may require additional support
We send out an All About Me information sheet to Parents before their child starts and set starting points with them on their first day. We carry out an end of term summative assessment and that information is placed onto a cohort sheet to record each child's age and stage of development. We also do 2 year checks on each child within 6 weeks of them starting and always before their 3rd birthday. We also fill out an Ecat child monitoring tool sheet to record the Communication and Language developmental stage for each child. Using all this information we are able to assess any child at risk. Key Person's work initially with any child considered at risk to give them extra support. Parents are informed at this stage and the SENco is also involved with the child to provide extra support in small group activities and these observations are recorded.
- How we identify and support children's learning and development needs
We plan each week providing specific activities for individual children's needs. We also set new Next Steps every half term, Parents are given the opportunity to set these themselves if they wish to do so. Regular assessments are carried out.
- Links we have to other agencies
We work closely with outside agencies including the Senior Area SENco, Speech and Language Therapists, Health Visitors, Portage workers, Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists whenever we feel it is necessary to involve them to support us and the child.
- How we support children transferring to school
During the last School term, we take our children who are going to Treleigh School into the Reception class for half an hour one morning a week to meet the Teacher and class Assistants. Key Persons go with their respective children who are going to a different School for one session during the last term. We set up a role-play area with school uniform, PE kits etc and talk to the children about their new Schools during the last term.
For those children needing extra support we have a Transition meeting with Sue De Seta (Senco) the Senior Area Senco and the Reception Class teachers to discuss everything that has been put in place during the child's time at pre-school. This will provide details of the area of support needed, strategies used a progress report.
Learning and development
- Specialist skills or training our staff have
All staff members attend regular training throughout the school year, the statutory training courses are updated as necessary. A Training Co-ordinator organises the training for all staff members and makes sure everyone attends the required 24 hours per School year. We have a fully trained SENco within the setting who works with children in small groups when a delay has been identified. All Senior and Junior staff members are First Aid trained and some have attended the Thrive Emotional Coaching course. The Senco has trained in Makaton signing which is relayed back to all staff members.
- Support we offer regarding children's health and well-being
We have a good Key Person system in place and we provide a friendly, safe environment in which children can develop in all areas.
- Ways we inform parents about how their child is being supported
We have regular meetings with Parents (half-termly) to have a look through their learning journals and these are available to Parents to see at all times. Key Persons are available each day to have a chat at the beginning or end of each session if required. We send out regular Newsletters keeping Parents informed of important information. We also have a notice board which is used to update Parents with lots of information and a digital photo frame in the reception area so that parents can see their children learning, exploring and interacting during their time at pre-School.
- Our complaints policy
Initially we offer a meeting with The Manager or Play Leader to hopefully resolve any issues raised, if the issue is not resolved at this level then the complaint can be put into writing and passed onto the Committee, and a meeting will be arranged between the Complainant and the Committee/Manager before an external mediator is involved. The OFSTED number is displayed on our Notice board for Parents who wish to contact them.
- Alterations we have made to make our building accessible
We created an Accessibility Plan in 2009 and The Hive was built in 2010 according to these plans. The new building is fully accessible having access ramps, wide gates and door openings.
- Facilities we have for personal care
We provide an area in the Children's toilet for personal care, nappy changing facilities are available and we also have a separate accessible toilet.
- Specialist resources we have
We use various sensory activities in our room, these can be set up as a specific activity or on occasions in a separate area ie: in a tent. We also use Now and Next cards and have a Visual Timetable, these are used to help children to settle and understand the routine. All staff members carry traffic light signals to give childen warning of a change in routine.
- How we include all children in activities, such as trips
We provide for all children to attend any trips we organise. Whilst we do not have our own School mini bus we use a local reputable coach company fully fitted with seat-belts and wheelchair access can be provided if necessary.
