Mission: Using psychology to enable positive change
Core Values

- Collaborative
- Child-centred
- Strengths-based
- Empowering
Our role is to promote positive outcomes for vulnerable groups of children and young people who have complex special educational needs and or a disability related to one or more of the following areas:
- Communication and interaction
- Cognition and learning
- Social, emotional or mental health
- Sensory and or physical
Statutory and Core Work
The Educational Psychology Service is funded by Cornwall Council to provide free to educational settings within Cornwall, specific pieces of statutory and core work. We carry out statutory psychological work in order to assess children and young people with special educational needs and we also undertake a number of applied psychological tasks to support improved outcomes for those children or young people with significant social, emotional and or special educational needs who are on the roll of a state educational setting within Cornwall and are also in care to Cornwall Council, subject to a Cornwall Council Child Protection Plan or are a Child in Care for whom a Recovery Plan is being written.
Traded Services
We offer a traded service to educational settings. This includes carrying out a range of assessments, delivery of individual and group interventions, attendance at prioritised meetings and providing advice and guidance to the support network around a child or young person. For staff within educational settings, we also offer an extensive range of staff training and staff support and supervision.
Parents/Carers and Young People
If a parent/carer or a young person themselves, are considering whether involvement of an Educational Psychologist would be beneficial, this needs to be discussed with the Special Educational Needs Coordinator for the educational setting the child or young person attends, to see if this would be appropriate.

Inclusion details
- How we make our service inclusive
When appropriate we work directly with children and young people in school, at home or in other settings. We also provide psychological advice to their parents and carers, and other adults who teach and support them. We offer a range of core, statutory and traded work which includes working with children and young people at all stages of the Code of Practice. We utilise translators when required.
- Staff SEND experience
We are Educational Psychologists, with the related specialist psychological knowledge and skills. Educational Psychologist is a protected statutory title. We all have enhanced Disclosure and Barring checks and we are all registered to practise by the Health Care Professions Council http://www.hcpcheck.org
We also have a number of trainee Educational Psychologists on our team, who are on placement with us as part of their Doctorate course. The trainee Educational Psychologists are supervised by experienced Educational Psychologists.
- How our service supports providers / schools / colleges
Through the application of applied psychological knowledge and skills:
- Consultations with parents and staff
- Assessment and intervention for individual pupils
- Advice on strategies to support children and young people
- Contributing to multi-agency meetings and review meetings
- Contributing to statutory Education Health and Care needs assessments
- Training for school staff, other professionals, parents and young people
- Individual, family and group therapeutic interventions
- Coaching/supervision for teachers and other staff
- Undertaking research projects to improve practice/service delivery
- Systemic work in schools and other organisations
- Support at key transition points
The Educational Psychology Service does work with children young people and their families at key transition points e.g. an Early Years child transitioning into School, when this is appropriate. Once again this is through the application of applied psychological knowledge and skills and the focus might be to facilitate a successful transition, identification of special educational need and or identification of appropriate provision.
