WAVES Counselling Project - Domestic Violence & Abuse

Click here if you need to quickly leave this page.

The WAVES Counselling Project is an award winning confidential counselling and outreach service provided by specialist trained counsellors. If you have experienced any form of domestic violence, abuse, or family violence, this service may be for you. By providing therapy and individual support for people, this project aims to enable you to make positive changes in your life.

The WAVES service is available to anyone over 16yrs of age, regardless of their gender, ability to pay, rural isolation, disability, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, cultural or social background or previous psychiatric history. We work in a holistic and integrated way. In short term counselling we apply ourselves to addressing the needs of each individual in a respectful and confidential way. The WAVES Counselling Project also aims to make its services available to anyone who does not usually have access to therapy.

What can I expect?

We will offer you an initial meeting in which you can discuss in confidence your particular needs. The next step is mutually agreed and usually involves referral to a counsellor in our teams.

Counselling offers the opportunity to discuss problems and difficulties with a person trained to work in a non-judgmental, caring way.

Your safety is our primary concern. Meetings will be in a venue that is safe, comfortable and confidential.

Is this for me?

One in four women, one in six men and one in five LGBT+ now experience some form of domestic violence, abuse or family violence.

  • Domestic violence, abuse or family violence may begin at any stage of a relationship and can continue after a relationship has ended.

  • Domestic violence, abuse or family violence can take many forms from physical attacks, to bullying and threats. It is often physical, psychological, emotional, financial, sexual or controlling behaviour.

  • Domestic violence, abuse or family violence can also occur in all family relationships.

  • Experience of domestic violence, abuse or family violence always affects children. Domestic violence, abuse or family violence tends to increase in frequency and severity over time and is rarely a one off event.

  • Domestic violence, abuse or family violence cuts across the boundaries of sex, social class, age, disability, sexuality and lifestyle.

What other support is available?

WAVES counselling and support services includes one to one counselling, access to support groups and workshops. In addition, we work in partnership with the Cornwall Refuge Trust (CRT).
