Fowey Pre-School
Services and organisations that have the Local Offer flash have filled out inclusion information, meaning that they meet the needs of people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)
Fowey Pre-School is based in the picturesque, ancient port town of Fowey. We our proud of our community and natural beauty, and we aim to utilise it at every opportunity.
Our bright and colourful playroom and enclosed exciting garden offer a safe, secure and stimulating environment for children to develop their potential. We provide generous care and attention due to our high ratio of adults to children.
The support of a personal key member of staff makes sure each child makes satisfying progress. The key person will work with you to help your child settle and thereafter make maximum benefit of the setting's activities, supporting your child in developing at their own pace. The provision for children's development and learning is guided by The Early Years Foundation Stage.

Early Years Local Offer response
- Systems and strategies we have in place to identify children that may require additional support
Home visits are required for all new starters..Chat wheels are completed with parents for all children to establish their own starting point. These are the first entry into the learning journals. Key workers will then observe, assess and plan for each child. Once a baseline assessment has been established, development is assessed through activities and observations. Development is tracked termly and recorded in the child's journal on a development matters tracking sheet, this includes language development. Any additional support required will be provided by our setting in consultation with parents or other relevant outside agencies. If the child has already been identified with SEND then we will liaise with the other professionals involved as necessary.
- How we identify and support children's learning and development needs
All staff make observations of the child's learning and development and link these to the EYFS phases of development. Each key worker will provide 'Next Steps' for their children. These are introduced into the planning process, and then observations enable us to assess the child's progression. Our planning system is a working document and evolves while we use it as activities and resources are extended in line with where the children's fascination and engagement take us. All staff have regular training to enable them to provide support to the best of their ability. Any concerns are discussed with families and team members to ensure support is put in place. If necessary our SENDco will advise on strategies to implement.
- Links we have to other agencies
We have links to many outside agencies; most frequently speech and language therapy and the early years inclusion team. We have also worked closely with educational psychologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, dieticians, social workers and the Child Development Centre. We would actively seek additional support from other agencies if appropriate. Our Senco has attended many TAC meetings and feeds back to the team supporting the child. She also regularly attends Senco network meetings to support best practice and has recently completed the NASEN Level 3 Award.
- How we support children transferring to school
We have excellent links with our local school (Fowey Primary), and involve ourselves in their events throughout the year. We would contact any school that one of our children is transferring to and encourage transition arrangements to be made. For a child with SEN we would be part of a TAC meeting to ensure a smooth transition for that child. At Fowey Primary, children attend 'learning together' sessions in the Summer term, as well as a picnic with year 6, to meet potential 'buddies'. All children attend a half day induction session. We provide a Passport written by Key Workers in conjunction with families, to ensure teachers know childrens starting points. Children's journals are shared with the reception teacher before being returned to the parents.
Learning and development
- Specialist skills or training our staff have
All staff have Level 3 qualifications as a minimum. All have a current Paediatric First Aid qualification and most have a Food Hygiene qualification. Several staff members have completed Mental Health Fist Aid training. Training is provided in many areas, including Safeguarding and Child Protection, Learning Language and Loving it, Makaton, Making Sense (sensory processing), Behaviour Management, Visuals Support (eg spot timers, traffic light systems etc), Manual Handling. Some staff have completed specialist SENCO training. We also have working experience of makaton, autism, epilepsy, global developmental delay, spina bifida, tracheostomy (working alongside nurse delivering medication and feeding through PEG), diminished immune system, visual impairment, hearing impairment, profound and multiple learning difficulty.
- Support we offer regarding children's health and well-being
Using the chat wheels before a child starts, we ensure we have a history of the child and their interests, and this can then be used to develop activities around the child's interests. We ensure risk assessments are carried out and regularly updated. We are committed to Healthy Early Years, and provide balanced nutritional snacks. Water is available to the child at all times. We have access to amazing indoor and outdoor spaces in the environs of Fowey River Academy, and go outside as much as possible. We also have access to the wider community, including a nearby beach. We devise individual health care plans for children with specific medical conditions. Sticker and 'wow' moments reinforce self-esteem. Children self register each morning using a photo of themselves to wich they add emotion cards, representing how they feel each day. Children are encouraged to switch these cards in response to their personal emotions.
- Ways we inform parents about how their child is being supported
For some children, a plan may need to be in place before they start with us. We are very keen to include all children into our setting and parents are experts at knowing how this should be done. We work closely with parents, giving them a daily feedback, and also with any professionals involved. We hold parents evenings (usually termly), we provide newsletters, a website and our activities can be followed on Facebook. There is also a separate, private, parents Facebook page for parents to see individualised parts of the children's day.
- Our complaints policy
We work in partnership with parents and welcome suggestions on how to improve our setting. We believe they are entitled to expect courtesy and prompt attention to their needs and wishes. Thus, we would anticipate that most concerns would be resolved quickly by an informal approach to our staff, but we do have a set of procedures for dealing with concerns.
Welfare
- Alterations we have made to make our building accessible
We operate in a modern building, within a leisure centre and as such the accessibility is good. However, we have reduced the level of some tables and equipment, and fitted lever taps in the toilet areas. Our garden and grounds are accessible to all children.
- Facilities we have for personal care
Our toilets are low level toilets for ease of use by children. They are located within our room so very easily accessible. We also have a nappy changing area. Water is thermostatically controlled. All staff are DBS checked, promote self-care as much as possible and ensure dignity is respected.
- Specialist resources we have
All our equipment is carefully chosen. Some specific equipment has been purchased, e.g. a hammock swing, scooter boards, Didicars and trike, so that an adult can use them with a child. Low level tables are used. We will assess the individual requirements of a child and endeavour to do all we can to support that child and provide necessary equipment. We will also accommodate resources provided by outside agencies, such as physiotherapists or ocupational therapists.
- How we include all children in activities, such as trips
The whole staff team work together to support the children. Plans are made, taking into consideration children's individual needs, and ways of maximising inclusion. All children attending our setting are offered the same opportunities and we work with parents to overcome any disadvantage they may face. We will make appropriate arrangements so that all children can take part in any outing (eg hiring a taxi equipped with wheelchair access).
