Early Years Local Offer response
- Systems and strategies we have in place to identify children that may require additional support
I am a qualified teacher with experience and training in working with Autistic and ADHD children. Settling in sessions will initially involve parents staying until the child, parent and myself are comfortable with moving onto the next stage. The length of these settling sessions will gradually increase as the child becomes more confident in being left at the setting. Initial discussions with parents will be a priority to share information about routines, preferences and any record such as the red health book or learning journey from a previous setting to ensure I know their needs.
I will make an entry assessment of each child to help monitor communication and language development and complete a 2 year review with the parent/carer before sharing this with the Health Visitor when they carry out their review.- How we identify and support children's learning and development needs
I have 3 children at my setting with an adult/child ratio of 1:3 enabling me to support children well. I share photos and achievements daily via WhatsApp as well as observations and written assessments with parents/carers including the 2 year old Progress Check to highlight any additional support that may be required.
I communicate with and listen to parents during drop off and pick times and throughout the day via text message or the individual child’s Whatsapp group and share information with other child care settings if the child has dual settings via email. I take part in regular training throughout the year to update and improve my knowledge of SEN and age specific strategies for teaching and learning.
I am aware of how to make the appropriate referrals to other childcare professionals via the Early Help Hub for example.
Parents are encouraged to provide me with information about their child's learning at home through daily conversation and photos which are placed in the child’s Memory Book so that we can work together to help the child's learning and development and monitor progress.- Links we have to other agencies
Parents are asked to share their child’s red book and give details of their Health Visitor. I give parents a copy of the 2 year check to take to the Health Visitor and attend local SENCO network meetings.
- How we support children transferring to school
When required, I will go on school runs with younger children experience of the building and routine at their chosen school. At my setting, we have a reading corner containing a variety of books for all ages and regularly read lots of stories. We will have positive discussions about school, photos of staff and premises. I help children practice skills such as being independent when going to the toilet and hand washing, getting changed and putting their own coat and shoes, as well as, encouraging their confidence in asking adults for help if they need it. I will attend learning together sessions or school events at our local schools as transition time approaches.
Learning and development
- Specialist skills or training our staff have
I am self employed with no additional staff. I have experience working in Early Years, Primary and Secondary settings as a qualified teacher and nursery assistant and therefore have plenty of experience and understanding of children’s growth and development.
I have had up to date mandatory training in : Paediatric First Aid, Safeguarding and Child Protection, Food Hygiene and regularly attend cluster meetings and training opportunities to keep up to date and gain fresh ideas. I would make sure I had the appropriate training to meet the needs of any child in my setting.- Support we offer regarding children's health and well-being
Particular health issues are always discussed with parents/carers and routines for the children can be followed with regard to food/sleep and toileting as the parents wish. Children are taught good hygiene practices from an early age and understand why it is important to keep themselves clean.
Drinks are available at all times as well as healthy snacks. I am aware of food allergens for children with allergies or intolerances and monitor what the children are eating.
Plenty of opportunities for physical activity are provided within the setting and on trips to local amenities.
I encourage children to talk about feelings and emotions using puppets and books and there are plenty of cosy quiet areas in which they can feel calm and safe.
I am up to date with safe guarding training and teach the children road safety and other aspects about keeping safe from an early age. My setting is risk assessed and also the outings that we go on. We also have regular fire drills and discuss the need for safety at home and while out.- Ways we inform parents about how their child is being supported
Parents receive updates every few hours whilst their child is with me in the form of photos and comments via WhatsApp. Photos and comments from the child go into a Memory book which can be viewed at any time by parents and the child. We regularly discuss achievements and changes in behaviour when required
- Our complaints policy
I give parents opportunities to comment on my service, welcome constructive criticism and work with parents to resolve issues. The Ofsted parents’ poster with Ofsted contact details is displayed on the notice board at the internal door to my setting.
I offer a copy of my complaints policy to each parent/carer and remind them that I would investigate all written complaints, inform ofsted within 14 days and notify those complaining of any outcomes/actions taken within 28 days.
Welfare
- Alterations we have made to make our building accessible
There has been a hand rail fitted on main steps to the entrance of my setting and a security light on the driveway and steps to improve visibility
- Facilities we have for personal care
I have a changing unit and separate room for changing/ potty training so children retain a sense of privacy whilst receiving personal care. There is a step for younger children to use and a bowl for hand washing in the same room or children have access to the main bathroom if they prefer. The changing mat is wiped after use.
Children have access to a bed or cot to sleep dependent on age and cosy areas for rest each with their own blankets which are washed regularly.- Specialist resources we have
I have a range of multi cultural toys and books, including positive examples of people of all ages and abilities. There is a low level play table and a varied choice of resources available at child level. There are tactile and stimulating toys for all ages and abilities, including bright lights and musical toys
- How we include all children in activities, such as trips
All activities are adapted to include all ages and abilities and trips are risk assessed and appropriate for the children attending based on their age and individual needs and these are risk assessed as necessary. If need be, trips and activities are discussed with parents/caters in advance so parents so we can plan together over any concerns.
We travel in my 7 seater car which has well researched, top of the range, aged related, rear facing car seats. I use a cross country style double pushchair, walking rope or reins for outings and assess which is appropriate to use on the day depending on children and activities.
Trips are regularly planned with other childminders to offer extra support and opportunities for children to socialise
