The Barn Day Nursery
Services and organisations that have the Local Offer flash have filled out inclusion information, meaning that they meet the needs of people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)

In 2004, we opened our doors, moving from our previous premises (Tregenna Castle and subsequently Connaught). We have been in the community of St Ives for just over 30 years; we are highly fortunate to have managers that have worked in this industry for well over 40!

Jan (one of the nursery owners) set up shop in St Ives back in 1993 with Louise (a native to St Ives!) and our Cornish teacher Sue. The nursery owners, coming from a land-locked county (Birmingham), found that the opportunities that are available locally are second to none; we have (we feel) the best beaches in the world and wonderful woodlands on our doorstep which is why we have chosen to weave an outdoor focus within our curriculum. Joe joined our nursery back in 2011 and ultimately achieved Early Years Teacher Status in 2019; a highly prestigious award. He works closely with all staff to improve outcomes for all children.

In 2018, St Erth Nursery (previously St Erth Childcare Centre) joined our family of nurseries with whom we share a wealth of knowledge, resources and expertise.

Early Years Local Offer response

Learning and development

Systems and strategies we have in place to identify children that may require additional support

Regular assessments via Tapestry online/digital learning journals. Before the age of 3, when in our care, all children will have a '2 Year Progress Check'. This is used to identify children's' developmental milestones. We also carry out termly progress checks and offer termly parent consultations.

How we identify and support children's learning and development needs

Observations and assessments via learning journals, consultation with parents, staff meetings. Our qualified Sendco closely observes and monitors all children's progress. Where additional support is identified, this is communicated with parents and plans are agreed.

Links we have to other agencies

Regular contact with Senior Locality Sendco, Early Help Hub, Speech and Language Therapy, occupational therapy etc.

How we support children transferring to school

We have exceptional links with all local schools. We offer transition

Welfare

Specialist skills or training our staff have

reSome staff have completed the visuals training course and use the appropriate visual aids within the setting. Some staff have undertaken Makaton training and Joe Greenfield is lead Makaton practioner.   Joe Greenfield and Autumn at the setting SENDco's and have completed the 2 day SENDCO training.

Support we offer regarding children's health and well-being

We have just begun providing lunches for the children and always choose balanced, healthy options. - we go out every day regardless of weather. Babies go out in specialized 4 seater buggy for a daily walk. Toddlers also use this. We use the school playing field for large motor exercise. We ensure a medical needs assessment is carried out on induction if there are issues to address. Sports for Tots sports coaching lessons for 3-5 year group are held weekly and ensure lots of physical play. Settling in sessions are offered to ensure children are integrated into nursery gradually. Key person system ensures children's attachment needs are met.

Ways we inform parents about how their child is being supported

Termly consultation sessions. IEP/ILP'S are written with SENDCO and parents and signed to ensure agreement all round. Additional support that is highlighted as necessary is sought via the Inclusion or Speech and Language services with parental consent. We feedback to parents daily when they pick up their child/ren.
