Learning and development

Systems and strategies we have in place to identify children that may require additional support

All children have their own key person. Their key person regularly observes each key child to ensure early years goals are being met. Where additional needs may be required our SENCO will work along side both parents and key worker to ensure we are helping the child in the most effective way for that individual. We also work with outside agencies to ensure the best possible outcome for every child in our care. 

How we identify and support children's learning and development needs

Through observation, liaising with parents and an effective key person system we are able to identify and areas which may need support within a child's development.

If we have identified that extra support is needed within any area of the child's development, we will work alongside parents to support the child. This may be through short term support or with the involvement of an external agency, such as the Early Years Inclusion team or Speech and language therapist.

Our staff are always updating their knowledge and experiences to enhance and support children's learning and development in all areas. We will work with parents to make sure that we are offering inclusive provision for all of our children.

We will then work with all involved with the child in order to support them with transitions to school and if they may need extra support in Reception Years.

 

Links we have to other agencies

We work with the local authorities as required.

We also use the Early Years Inclusion service when we have development concerns about a child. We work closely with agencies such as Speech and language therapists and Occupational therapists.

How we support children transferring to school

We ensure children understand the forthcoming change, we do this through circle times, role play and games. We also invite the children's reception class teachers in to meet the children in an environment they are already comfortable in. We endeavour to help children be school ready be promoting Independence, self care and confidence. Every child transitioning to school has an end of term report to help the teacher know where each child is with their learning and development. 

Where a child is going to need an enhanced transition, we will involve the new school, as soon as we know. We are then able to offer a thorough handover, offering schools the opportunities to visit the child in setting and to be able to talk with the key person. We support this with a communication passport around the child.

Welfare

Specialist skills or training our staff have

Our current staff team consists of Level 2 apprentices up to Early Years Teacher Status.  They attend regular training to ensure best practice. Our staff hold paediatric first aid, we also have members of staff with relevant safeguarding training. Our staff use Makaton as an additional language in their day to day practice.

We are supported in our practice by the Early Years Inclusion team along with teachers who specialise in communication. They will support the staff with visuals and child specific advice.

 

Support we offer regarding children's health and well-being

Every child within our care is valued as an individual and needs/ wants are respected.

We aim to support our children and our families. We do this by holding regular conversations with parents and for the key workers to build up a rapport with them. We share advice and guidance given out by the local authority within our reception area as well as through our communication APP.

We will support with the administering of medication, where appropriate, following our policy.

Ways we inform parents about how their child is being supported

We work closely with our parents and liaise with them daily on how their child is, and what they have achieved that day. We also have parents evening. We use an online app so that parents and staff can communicate  easily, sharing information and achievements.

When a child is supported by an individual Learning Plan, then the keyworker will be asking for their views on how the targets have supported their child, we will add to the form, their views as well.

Our complaints policy

A complaints policy is in place and followed. Every complaint is treated fairly and with respect for both parties. complaints are taken to the correct person and dealt with promptly and confidentially. They are handled sensitively and professionally. The Manager deals with any complaints in the first instance and seeks advice from the Head Office Management team if needed. 

Access

Alterations we have made to make our building accessible

Our nursery was renovated to ensure access for all.

Facilities we have for personal care

Children have their own toilets and hand washing facilities. There are also nappy changing facilities.

Specialist resources we have

The setting Senco works closely with the Early Years inclusion team and has worked hard to provide resources such as visual timetables, sensory boxes etc.

We will also work alongside any agencies involved to support with equipment such as specialist furniture.

How we include all children in activities, such as trips

All activities are planned for with all children in mind - each activity can be adapted to accommodate any additional physical or developmental needs any child has.
