North Petherwin Sunbeams
Services and organisations that have the Local Offer flash have filled out inclusion information, meaning that they meet the needs of people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)

Sunbeams Nursery is situated in the beautiful rural Parish of North Petherwin in North Cornwall.  It is based in a room within North Petherwin School, providing opportunities to use a wide variety of facilities and resources and offering excellent continuity for those children who go on to attend the school.

Your child can attend Sunbeams from the age of 2 years up to the age of 5. We are a small and friendly setting, catering for up to 16 children at any one session during the School Term Time.  We aim to offer a home-from-home environment where children can learn and explore safely, gaining independence and promoting their confidence and self-esteem.

Within our main room we have different zoned areas enabling the children to choose where and what they want to play with. As well as this, we have free-flow access to our decking area which allows the children to partake in various activities outdoors. We also make use of the school grounds on a daily basis to enable the children to explore the larger space in the play-ground and on the field.

Our sessions provide a wide variety of open-ended play activities, together with more structured learning opportunities which support children’s development across all areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage.

Staff will spend quality time with all the children supporting and extending their learning through interesting and challenging play based activities, which are geared towards each child’s needs and interests.

Early Years Local Offer response

Learning and development

Systems and strategies we have in place to identify children that may require additional support

Every child is allocated a Key Person when they start at Sunbeams to help support them through the settling-in experience but also to support their on-going needs, learning and development whilst at Nursery. As we are a small team, each member of staff will come to build strong relationships with all our children and families. During the first weeks of getting to know you and your child we will carry out observations as well as find out information from you in order to assess their starting points (we call this a baseline assessment). We will then plan activities specifically for your child according to their interests and Next steps. We carrying out Termly reviews of the progress your child is making as well as a 2 year old progress check if your child starts with us before they are 3. These systems enable us to identify any additional support which may be required, we will discuss this with you and with your permission we can seek advice from outside agencies.

How we identify and support children's learning and development needs

Our sessions provide a wide variety of open-ended play activities, together with more structured learning opportunities which support children's development across all areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage. Staff will spend quality time with all the children supporting and extending their learning through interesting and challenging play based activities, which are geared towards each child's needs and interests. Because the maximum group size is 16 children, your child will get lots of individual care and attention with time to talk and discuss their activities. When additional support is required we will ensure activities are geared to your child's specific needs. We will follow advice from outside professionals and will use visual supports such as timetables, traffic light system and star charts to help support learning and promote positive behaviour.

Links we have to other agencies

We work closely with local authority professionals and our locality Inclusion team. We also have links with a variety of outside agencies such as The Speech and Language Team, Family support, Paediatricians, Health and Social Care team, Educational psychologists as well as our Local Children's Centre.

How we support children transferring to school

We aim to make the transition process as smooth as possible for all children, whether they stay at North-Petherwin Primary School or move-on to another School. We will invite the class teachers to come into the Nursery and a member of staff will accompany your child into initial taster days in their reception class. We use photos of their new teaching staff and environment within the Nursery and plan joint activities with Nursery and reception children. With parental permission we meet with the reception teacher and School SENCO to discuss each child's learning and development needs.

Welfare

Specialist skills or training our staff have

All our staff are qualified and are highly experienced at working with children. The Nursery Manager is qualified to Degree level in Health and Early Years. The Nursery Manager has attended 2 day SENCo Induction Training. The School SENCo has achieved the Master’s-level National Award for Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator and is also the SENCo across the federation of North-Petherwin and Werrington Schools. We attend regular Network meetings to ensure we keep our practice up-to date. Our team have also attended courses such Team Teach, Behavioural Management and de-escalation training, Rights Respecting Schools training, Integrated Working, Making Sense of Autism, Makaton and Communication counts.

Support we offer regarding children's health and well-being

Your child's safety is our number one priority so we work hard to ensure we have an effective risk assessment system and daily checks in place. All of our staff have attended Safeguarding training and the Head Teacher is our nominated Child Protection Officer. Our Nursery room is carefully set out in order to provide areas for more active play as well as areas where children can go to relax and sit quietly if they wish to. We use small group-times as opportunities to discuss our feelings, keeping safe, being healthy as well as our rights and how we can respect the rights of others. We use resources such as puppets, stories, turn-taking games and reward systems to reinforce this learning. We offer a healthy cafe-style snack which includes a selection of fruit, a savory cracker option and milk or water. We have hand-washing systems in place and encourage children to develop self-help skills such as pouring their own drinks and cutting their own fruit. We inform parents daily of their child's eating habits. Our weekly newsletters provide parents with information on current events or activities at school or in the local community.

Ways we inform parents about how their child is being supported

Effective partnership with parents is highly important to us. We welcome all our families to come and speak to us at any-time and we encourage you to share any news, achievements or concerns about your child with us. Every child has a home-liaison book which is a way for us to communicate with you your child's achievements and next steps as well as any practical messages and we welcome you to use it in the same way. We will also give you verbal feedback at every session about what your child has enjoyed doing that day. We provide parents with written information through our weekly and Termly newsletter, including suggestions of ways you can support your child's learning at home. We send home a progress report once a Term and will invite you to come into the setting to meet with your child's Key Person at different points throughout the year to discuss their learning and development. We welcome parents to come into the nursery to share any special skills or interests you might have and plan up to 3 trips per year for both children and parents to attend.

Our complaints policy

We will give prompt and serious attention to any concerns about the running of our School/Nursery and will work together to resolve any problems. We follow statutory guidelines and our full complaints procedures are set out in our complaints policy which is available on the school website.

Access

Alterations we have made to make our building accessible

The School and Nursery are both accessible via ramps for wheelchair access. We have new disabled toilet facilities. We have an intercom system to the main entrance. Outside we have flat decking to enable easy access to our free-flow area.

Facilities we have for personal care

We have toilet facilities for the children as well as a separate disabled toilet with nappy changing facilities.

Specialist resources we have

We ensure that children have access to any equipment or resources necessary in order to support their individual needs and we endeavour to access extra resources where they are not already available. We have a variety of sensory equipment and visual aids. We have two new Interactive tablets for the children to access on a regular basis. We provide books and toys which promote positive self-images.

How we include all children in activities, such as trips

We are an inclusive setting and all our activities are tailored to meet the individual needs of the children. We plan up to three trips per year and ask that parents accompany us to these. We will work together with parents to plan and fully risk-assess the event before it takes place.
