TARQ'S ARQ - Pre School Nursery Family
Services and organisations that have the Local Offer flash have filled out inclusion information, meaning that they meet the needs of people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)

My pre-school concept will be the same as my main TARQ'S ARQ philosophy!....

 That is....(here come the bullet points!)....

*Raising self-esteem

*Child led education/ stimulation

*Ridiculous staff/ child ratios

*Lower numbers of children

 I'm sure that you and everybody know that I have an utterly unwavering faith and belief in all children (and some grown-ups! Hee!). ...Give a child self-esteem and literally watch them thrive and flourish!!!

 The way I achieve this is to, in a sense, give children ownership of their education/ stimulation. Follow their nose and build around what they are interested and passionate about. This maximises their chances of success as they will approach with confidence and enthusiasm, which leads on to extended learning for example, if Johnny struggles with puzzles but loves dinosaurs, we simply offer dinosaur puzzles! Hey presto! Puzzle genius in no time!!!

 Another well known fact is that I firmly believe that children learn best, and often quickest, through experiencing risk in a safe environment!!! ...So, alongside everything lovely, fluffy and soft that is found in all good settings..... the children will use actual knives for chopping their food, proper cutlery and crockery, access real tools and materials eg hammers, saws, drills, hot glue guns...the list is endless!!! Hee!!! They can also access toys/ activities that are seemingly thought to be beyond their grasp at pre-school age!! ...Like Lego, k'nex, hamma beads, loom bands, fully functioning musical instruments (full drum kits, electric guitars, violins, pianos, studio microphones all there to be used!), cool scientific stuff like electricity, chemicals etc!!! If they wish to cook lobster therm-adore rather than fairy buns then cool!!! ..let's go with it!!! Hee! ...I could go on and on but I guess you get the idea!

 The very reason that we can do this safely is due to the fact that instead of concentrating on the money side of childcare I concentrate on the child side of childcare!!! ...Whereas I could get away with myself and one other member of staff I have, at any one time, 5 staff creating very very high staff/ child ratios! ...Believe it or not, I could legally get away with nearly 40 children in my space so I'm looking at around 10ish at pre-school!!! (Extra space can mean more room, more toys, more time to explore stuff, less noise, less chaos, more confidence to name but a few benefits!!!)

 This means that not only are children extremely well supervised, we can also tailor their education personally!!! ....An added bonus being that if a few wish to go out and explore the world I can simply pop a little group with a couple of grown-ups and off they go!!!

TARQ'S ARQ is also Makaton crrrrrazy!!!! ....I am a conversational signer and with the help of my trusty grown-ups we don't sign as an extra or special skill.....we sign as a matter of fact!!! ...Signing is simply part of our language!

This ties in very well with our emphasis on inclusion and ever-growing client list of SEN!!! ...I do myslef have extensive experience of SEN (school, nursery and private experience!) right across the board as well as boasting both SEN and safeguarding specialists among my staff! We can also boast a wide open plan room, accommodating tiolet space, special "changing table", a hoist ...and to top it all off....no stairs!!!

Another important factor to me is the "care" in childcare! ....When I first embarked on my career some 20+ years ago childcare was an extension of the home where the older children acted as role models for the younger and we all learned together...like a family!!! (Resulting in self-esteem and confidence rising all round!!)

In my opinion children need warmth, real actual care and attainable role models!!! ...None of this is rocket science.....it's just showing children the respect they deserve!

Learning and development

Systems and strategies we have in place to identify children that may require additional support

During the induction process we liaise with parents / guardians, previous childcare providers and when required - health visitors and  The Personal Child Health Record (also known as the PCHR or 'that red book')  in order to acquire as much information as possible with regards to the child's levels of development and styles of learning!


Because we truly believe that each and every one of our children are very much individual the observation and assessment process is almost continuous with record keeping and information sharing happening daily to ensure we can give those precious children the very best start to their "life adventures"!


This, accompanied by EYFS tracking sheets, the excellent ECAT (Every Child a Talker) monitoring tool, the two year old developmental check and of course the cohort tracking system not only allow us to carefully monitor and plan those all important "next steps" for each child they also allow us to build an accurate informative personalised record of development to inform other professionals / settings / schools when children move on, thus maintaining consistency of care which is indeed paramount for all children!

How we identify and support children's learning and development needs

In addition to the above at TARQ'S ARQ we also enjoy a constant training and staff development program with recent courses including :- Makaton signing, SENCO, Autism awareness, Visual impairment awareness, Visual support, Epilepsy, Behaviour strategies + management to name but a few!


All of this combined with our regular planning meetings allows us to keep continuation of provision with activities and an environment that is targeted to children's individual needs/ learning styles!

Links we have to other agencies

We work very closely with a wide variety of agencies as they are so vital to the well-being of our children, families and communities!


These include :- Other childcare settings, Reception class teachers, Speech and Language services, visual and hearing impairment services, health visitors, educational psychologists, physiotherapists, portage workers, GP's and social services!

How we support children transferring to school

Because we deliver and collect children form up to 12 schools we have very very strong links with local educational establishments!!!


We visit them / they visit us!


Information carefully gathered over time is happily shared!


Activities / environments are tailored to help "practice" school routines!


School age siblings freely mix with pre-school siblings at our lovely setting!


Pre-school friends even sometimes "help" us with school deliveries / collections to give them important experience of the school environment!

Welfare

Specialist skills or training our staff have

As well as the specialist training outlined above (in question 2) all but one of our team of trusty staff are trained to a level 3 standard in childcare!....This is not of course a requirement but we feel that this gives our practitioners the best opportunity to offer positive experiences to the wide range of families we serve!


Indeed we have very nearly reached our target of ALL staff holding the "BIG 5" as we call it :- Level 3 childcare, Paediatric first aid, epilepsy awareness, safeguarding, and prevent training!


In addition to this we currently have 4 staff with degree standard childhood qualifications, a qualified teacher, an early years HLTA (of some 33 years experience!!) and an EYP (early Years Practitioner)!!

Support we offer regarding children's health and well-being

Due to our philosophy that leans heavily toward PHSE (Personal Health and Social Education) our young friends have opportunities aplenty with regards to social play and where needs are identified more targeted  support can be offered!


With a focus on positive behaviour and a wide variety of ages TARQ'S ARQ fosters a wonderful "peer mentoring" scheme where the role models are not just "stuffy old grown-ups" but friends who are often much nearer the childs' own stage of development!....This not only gives children realistic role models to look up to, it also means they can "be that role model" almost instantly which allows them themselves to be positive role models for others!!! ..It's not rocket science!!!..It's true!!!

Ways we inform parents about how their child is being supported

In conjunction with regular parent consultations we very much have an "open doors" policy and very close relationships with our families. This is partly due to our completely flexible approach to childcare days, sessions, hours and services! ...Indeed we even help our families with home routines and where required collect and deliver children (and their grown-ups) to and from those homes!!!


Whereas other settings have keyworkers we have Buds and Buddies where children develop bonds with particular staff members allowing us to really inform observations which in turn advise planning, activities and of course learning journeys!

Our complaints policy

Once again due to our close relationships with families and daily feedback, issues and complaints are most often dealt with in the moment through discussion!


In any case all complaints are dealt with before a 28 day period has passed and ALL complaints are taken very seriously!


We always display the complaints procedure including details to directly contact OFSTED.

Access

Alterations we have made to make our building accessible

We are lucky enough to have a rather charming old school building all on the ground floor with wide corridors, large rooms and very spacious front door / reception area which boasts a concrete ramp to ease access!

Facilities we have for personal care

With all the different ages groups and different friends we have toilets of all sizes with low sinks and hand-washing facilities!


Potties and adjustable toilet seats are in abundance and changing facilities can be floor or waist height!

Specialist resources we have

In addition to all that has been previously mentioned we have a movable hoist, specialist chairs and activity tables / stations, wheelchair friendly toilet, visual timetables, flash cards, traffic lights and a wide range of multi cultural resources!


We also regularly utilise the local health resource library and specialist resources from our friendly LEA!

How we include all children in activities, such as trips

Inclusion at TARQ'S ARQ is so very very vital that every single child has access to all trips, activities, and occasions regardless of any differences whatever they may be!!!


Differentiation, risk assessments and child-led learning / fun form part of our daily lives and if that means pulling in extra staff, specialists, specific vehicles and or resources then so be it!!!....To us it's simply a no brainer!!!
