Canvin, Laura
Services and organisations that have the Local Offer flash have filled out inclusion information, meaning that they meet the needs of people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)

I am a childminder working in Roche, alongside another childminder. I've been working in this setting for just over 11 years, when I started out as a student. I was so passionate about the job that I continued working there throughout my time at college and university. Working alongside another childminder gives huge benefits to both the setting and the children.

Since working in the setting, we have been graded Outstanding by Ofsted on both inspections.

I offer childcare for children aged 0-16.

Notes

Michelle's Childminding, is a childminding service ran from Michelle's family home. Myself and Michelle work together to care for the children in our setting, as well as planning activities together, trips, doing paperwork and assessments, attending training courses and much more!

Michelle has 3 children of her own, one in full time work, and the other two in school. She has a new puppy after losing her old dog last year. Both dogs have been a very valuable attribute to the setting and has helped many children (and adults) overcome their fear of dogs with their kind and gentle manner, and puppy dog eyes!

The setting it's self consists of a lounge/play area, child use bathroom, kitchen/diner, hallway, bedrooms used for sleeping/extra play room and a large garden with several facilities.

Early Years Local Offer response

Learning and development

Systems and strategies we have in place to identify children that may require additional support

Through training I have attended and in depth research I have great knowledge in supporting the needs of all children. I provide extensive and detailed observations, termly reports and 2 year checks, as well as day to day routines and getting to know and understand each child. Documentation is designed to show what the children can do and what their next steps are. This documentation will identify children that may require additional support.

How we identify and support children's learning and development needs

Information from planned observations, assessments and daily observation is used to plan specific personalised support for every child to ensure that children achieve as much as they can in relation to their starting points and potentials. Planning for individual children takes into account their culture and background, including any children with special educational needs and/or disabilities and those learning English as an additional language.

Links we have to other agencies

I aim to work alongside all schools, nurseries and other professionals which may come into contact with the children in our care to ensure children are fully supported from all areas.

How we support children transferring to school

Each child is given a 'Transition Document' which highlights their current levels of achievement and their next steps etc, for when they leave for school. The document has additional information for those with SEND, which gives information about their individual needs, how they can be supported etc.

Welfare

Specialist skills or training our staff have

I am first aid and food hygiene trained which enables me great information into being able to support children in being healthy. The children are very active whilst in my setting as we are often on trips, such as the local park, soft play areas, toddlers groups and the outdoor area. I have also been involved in ‘Healthy Early Years Training’ and my setting is recognised as a Healthy Early Years Setting. Through training I have attended and in depth research I have great knowledge in supporting the needs of all children.

Support we offer regarding children's health and well-being

I have cared for a few children with SEND and have always met his/her needs through regular contact with his main carer and other professionals involved in his/her well being and development. I ask for copies of any letters/referrals from the child’s GP/physician/diet specialist etc and have regular contact with the SENCO worker to ensure we are all working together. I aim to make sure any children with SEND participates in all activities with the other children, but also to include some further specific games and activities for the child to enjoy which the other children can join in with too.

The toys, equipment and activities I offer reflect good multiculturalism. Toys reflect a range of ethnic diversities and pictures in jigsaws and other resources do not stereotype. Any activities including craft activities will promote positive attitudes to diversity, with many activities focusing on important events and celebrations from all religions.

Ways we inform parents about how their child is being supported

I aim to always work closely with parents and carers and build up positive relationships with all parents and carers I come into contact with. Parents/Carers are always involved in their child’s learning and development. I engage in discussion with parents daily, and invite them to view their children's folders as often as possible.

Our complaints policy

It is a condition of my registration to investigate all written complaints relating to the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage.

If I do receive a formal written complaint, I will inform Ofsted within 14 days that a complaint has been made. I will ensure I investigate all complaints and notify the complainant of the outcomes of the investigation within 28 days.

I will make sure I keep a written record of all complaints and their outcome for at least three years. These will be kept confidential but, as required, I will provide Ofsted, on request, with a written record of all complaints within a specified period and the action taken as a result of each complaint. I will retain all records for a minimum of 3 years.

Access

Alterations we have made to make our building accessible

Access to my house is gained via a ramp at the front. The rest of the house used for caring for the children is fully accessible to all.  Access to my outdoor area is gained via double doors leading from the lounge to the decking area. The lower part of my garden can be accessed either by 2 small steps, or a ramp.

Facilities we have for personal care

The children have access to a downstairs toilet with hand washing facilities, as well as a potty if required.

Specialist resources we have

I am currently updating all my resources to include more specialist items. I currently have a ramp used for access and some sensory toys.

How we include all children in activities, such as trips

I ensure that my practice and my environment are always inclusive. I take into account families and individuals varied life experiences and needs. I ensure to promote the individuality of all members of the setting, wherever this is possible and reasonable, irrespective of ethnicity, religion/belief, attainment, age, disability, gender or background. This includes; dietary and dress requirements of religious groups, additional physical requirements, dietary and allergy requirements and language and cultural requirements.
All important information if recorded in my risk assessments and policies which explain how we include all children.
