Early Years Local Offer response
- Systems and strategies we have in place to identify children that may require additional support
I have an initial discussion with parents and share information about routines, preferences and record this to ensure that I know their needs. I make an entry assessment of each childs development including an ECAT tracking form to help monitor communication and language development. I complete a two year review with the parent/carer and share this with the health visitor when they carry out their review. Parents are able to stay with their child at first or have short sessions in order to settle them. I complete a learning and development record every term which highlights any areas that need additional support.
- How we identify and support children's learning and development needs
I have been childminding for 19 years and have experience of the Early Years Foundation Stage. I have a maximum of three children under the age of 5 years. This small adult/child ratio enables me to support the children. I share daily diaries, observations and written assessments including the 2 year old Progress Check to highlight any additional support that may be required. The parents have a learning journey which is sent home showing observations, photographs and future planning for their child. They are welcome to add any further photographs or information. I contact other settings if the child has dual settings and share learning journeys with them. I know how to make the appropriate referrals to other childcare professionals if extra help is needed i.e. speech and language therapy. I have had experience referring children to a speech and language therapist and have helped the children to improve following guidance from the therapist.
- Links we have to other agencies
Parents give me details of their Health Visitor and I give them a copy of their 2 year Progress Check to take to the Health Visitor. I have attended local SENCO meetings and have SENCO contact details for advice and information.
- How we support children transferring to school
I have attended training focusing on transition to school. I read lots of stories and we have discussions about school. I help children become independent going to the toilet, washing hands, getting changed, putting on their own coat and shoes as well as building their confidence to ask adults for help if they need it. I have attended learning together sessions at schools if the parents have been unable to attend.
Learning and development
- Specialist skills or training our staff have
I have up to date training in Paediatric First Aid, Safeguarding and Child Protection, and Food Hygiene. I have an NVQ3 in Early Years Care and Education and I have attended Makaton training courses. I would ensure that I had the appropriate training to meet the needs of any particular child.
- Support we offer regarding children's health and well-being
Any particular health issues would be discussed with parents/carers. I work with parents to ensure routines for the children can be followed with regard to sleep/food and toileting. Children are taught good hygiene practice from an early age and understand why it is important to keep clean. I encourage self care and independence. I have a sickness policy to reduce the risk of cross infection. Water is available at all times and I offer healthy snacks and meals or the child can bring their own food. I am aware of food allergens and monitor what the children are eating. The children have a lot of physical activity playing in the garden, walking in the woods, or to the stream and along the Camel Trail. I am up to date with safeguarding training and I teach the children road safety. I do regular risk assessments and have fire drills. I provide a caring home environment to nurture growth and development.
- Ways we inform parents about how their child is being supported
I have regular chats with parents or phone calls and I share daily diaries and learning journeys. I also produce a newsletter half termly so the parents are able to see the activities the children will be doing and any other news.
- Our complaints policy
Parents will see a copy of my complaints policy when they register their child. I display the OFSTED parents poster with contact details on my notice board.
Welfare
- Alterations we have made to make our building accessible
There is easy parking outside my house and only a small step to come through the front door.
- Facilities we have for personal care
My toilet and changing area is upstairs with a bannister to hold. There is a step for younger children and a small toilet seat if needed. The children have separate towels for handwashing. The changing mat is cleaned with antibacterial spray after every use and I use disposable gloves. Children are able to sleep in a travel cot or pushchair.
- Specialist resources we have
I have a range of books showing positive examples of people of all ages/abilities and cultures. I have tactile and stimulating toys and have a low level play table for craft activities. I also have left handed scissors, big pens and paintbrushes and booster cushions for seats if needed.
- How we include all children in activities, such as trips
All activities are adapted to include everyone. Trips are risk assessed and are discussed in advance with parents. I have car seats for all ages and single/double pushchairs.
