Clinical Psychology and Therapy Service (CPATS)
Services and organisations that have the Local Offer flash have filled out inclusion information, meaning that they meet the needs of people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)

We are a psychological and therapeutic service which supports the networks around children in care, children adopted from care, care leavers, children subject to special guardianship orders & children on child protection plans.

What is the CPAT Psychology Service?

The CPAT Psychology Service is set up to:
“promote the well-being of children in known to social care to support them to fulfil their potential and develop more healthy relationships”.

The service promotes a fuller understanding of the lives of children with compromised life histories, including experiences of abuse, neglect and trauma and the unique challenges that they can face. It does this by facilitating a better understanding among both carers and the professional staff who support them. Our work supports placement stability and reduces moves for young people.

What does the team do?

To achieve these aims the service offers training, consultation and promote psychological thinking in  the professional network, and offers some assessment and therapeutic services to young people and their carers.

Clinical Psychologists are embedded in social care teams supporting children with a range of emotional, social, behavioural and relational difficulties which stem from developmental trauma. We use a number of psychological models to inform our work including attachment trauma, systemic, psychoanalytic, cognitive behavioural and developmental.

We can offer consultations to the relevant professionals and carers involved, where we will talk about some difficulties that may be occurring within the family, foster placement or adoptive family and begin to work together towards improving the situation and addressing key issues.

There may be a number of outcomes following an initial consultation, including further consultation, training, assessment, therapeutic intervention with carers and young children, and liaison with or signposting to, other services. Carers and social workers will receive a written summary of the consultation including suggested actions and strategies.

We also support social care professionals by running training, offering group supervision, bespoke workshops and practical development. The team promotes psychological thinking on a systemic level by inputting into social care decision making panels, regularly meeting with social care managers and supporting the development of new ways of working like mentoring schemes for foster carers and a multi-agency child sexual abuse pathway.
