Learning and development

Systems and strategies we have in place to identify children that may require additional support

Alterations we have made to make our building accessible
Wide doors are used to enable wheel chair and pushchair access, alternative access via a gate can be used to access the garden area and the outdoor areas, Appropriate furniture is set out within the rooms to ensure the children can sit/ stand comfortably at the table. Access is reviewed termly to ensure review inclusive access.
We have facilities for personal care.
Low level sinks are provided within the children's bathrooms and messy areas,
Specialist resources we have
Talking pens can be used for children with EAL to settle in new children. Visuals are used by the staff to support children with communication difficulties, traffic light system and visual timetables are used to support transition of activities throughout the day.
How we include all children in activities, such as trips
Maintain appropriate ratios as well as recruit all members of staff to take part in such trips.

How we identify and support children's learning and development needs

We use an Every Child a Talker Monitoring tool to monitor children's communication and language development as well as their social interaction skills. We observe and assess children's progress according to the EYFS framework and refer to outside professionals if we are concerned about a child's progress. Parental permission is granted from the parent before any referrals are made. Regular room observations are conducted by a member of the management team.

Links we have to other agencies

Bright Eyes work closely with social services, Health visitors and Speech and Language therapists. We also work with locality inclusion workers, Local schools, Educational psychologists, The local authority and St Austell Library. We also work alongside other professionals that are involved with the children and their families.

How we support children transferring to school

The term before the children start school the pre-school room leader comprises a list of all the schools the children will be attending. The room leader then invites the new teachers to the nursery to meet the children in their familiar surroundings and meet and share information with their key person . This enables a smooth transition for the children so that they become familiar with the new surroundings within their school environment. We also provide school uniform for all the schools in the surrounding areas so the children can identify the uniform they will be wearing.

Welfare

Specialist skills or training our staff have

All Staff are paediatric first aid trained, up to date EYFS trained and safeguarding trained too. This is renewed every three years. Health and safety training has been delivered to all the staff at the nursery along with food and hygiene training. Senior members of staff have also undertaken an advanced Health and Safety training course. One our team has been on the two day Makaton Course. 

Twelve are level 3 and 1 is an apprentice working towards their level 3 qualification. The setting SENCO

has been working and supporting children and families for 2 years and has worked with a variety of children aged 3 months to 8years, supporting all development and meeting all children's individual needs. The setting also has two allocated Deputy SENCO's. 

 

Support we offer regarding children's health and well-being

We have a variety of leaflets available to share with parents regarding healthy eating and the importance of good hygiene such as regular teeth brushing. In an additional to providing these opportunities within the setting for children to learn about the importance of hand washing, cleaning teeth and eating healthy food. Communication with the health visitor enables practitioners to communicate and source information that is needed at the time as well as sharing information regarding a child's 2 year check. We also ask parents to share their child's red book with us on induction to enable us to make links with the health visitor.

Ways we inform parents about how their child is being supported

At Bright Eyes we use an interactive system called Famly as an online learning journey. This enables the parent to see observations and next steps that have been published and they are able to comment and view what has been observed. Parents are encouraged to comment and feedback. We also hold a parents evening termly so the children's progress can be shared with the parents and key person. We currently use a system called Famly that enables us to communicate with parents and carers.

Our complaints policy

Any concerns raised within the nursery are recorded, explored and responded too within twenty four hours. The outcome of what is done is also recorded and then the information is shared with the person who raised the concern which they are then required to sign off to evident that the result was shared with them. Where a serious complaint or accusation is raised Ofsted would be informed. A copy is kept in a complaints folder for record purposes.

Talking pens can be used for children with EAL to settle in new children, Place plus funding is applied for when it is felt a child would benefit from extra support depending on their needs, Visual cards are used by the staff to support children with communication difficulties, traffic light system to support transition of activities throughout the day.

Facilities we have for personal care

We have low level sinks and child friendly toilets where children are encouraged to be independent in their own care routines. Also well equipment change tables provide a comfortable space for regular and dignified nappy changing.

Specialist resources we have

We have a range of books available in different languages. In our pre-school room we have an interactive tilting table that has software available in different languages. Our biggest asset is our warm staff with a willingness to learn and work with parents to promote an inclusive culture.

How we include all children in activities, such as trips

Maintain a higher than necessary ratio of children per adult. Utilizing bank staff and volunteers to ensure this happens.
