St Petroc's Early Years
Services and organisations that have the Local Offer flash have filled out inclusion information, meaning that they meet the needs of people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)

St Petroc's Early Years is an independent Nursery caring for children aged from three months to approximately five years, The under 2's are called Little Turtles, and are cared for by qualified staff who have been working in childcare for a number of years. We provide a range of activities, such as water play, painting, making play dough, and heuristic play to name a few.

The 2-3's are called our Sea Lions and are based in the front of the school, with their purpose designed early years garden which leads to the their own front door. The Sea Lions make the most of having a large outdoor learning space, and try to use it most days, waterproofs are provided for those days when the weather is not so sunny!

The Dolphins room is led by Tahira White and her enthusiastic team of staff. The Dolphins go on regular outings, such as to the park, fire station or library, and work with the local schools as best we can to ensure a smooth transition.

Early Years Local Offer response

Learning and development

Systems and strategies we have in place to identify children that may require additional support

Before a child begins with us in the Early Years, we offer settling in sessions where the child and parent come into the setting and spend time with Early Years staff to begin to build up a relationship. On these sessions, any specific needs of that child can be discussed, and with guidance from the SENCO, we will ensure we will do what we can to meet the needs of that child. Parents are asked to fill in a chat wheel about their child when starting at the setting, which also provides us with information to help identify any additional needs. Once a child has started, we then fill in an assessment on entry development sheet within the first few weeks, to give us an idea of the level your child is working at. We regularly observe our children which helps to form our individual planning, and at the end of every term the Little Turtles and Sea Lions write a report for parents about their child's progress. This also helps us to distinguish any areas that we feel a child may need extra support in, ranging from speech to physical development. We also use a monitoring tool known as Every Child's a Talker, which is completed for each child at the end of each term, and helps us to see where a child is at with regards to their Communication and Language development. Around the age a child turns two we invite parents to attend a meeting with their child's key person to discuss the level a child is working out. This usually coincides with the two year old check that health visitors offer, and information we provide is to be passed on to the Health Visitor .We can access place plus funding if required, which will give us more funds to be able to provide specific equipment for a child if needed.

How we identify and support children's learning and development needs

We provide visual supports in the Little Turtles, Sea Lions and the Dolphins, in the form of pictures of toys on boxes, and a visual timetable in the Sea Lions and Dolphins room. We are becoming more confident about using spot timers and traffic light systems for helping specific children in the Sea Lions room, although these are already used confidently in the Dolphins. Some staff have attended a training course on behaviour management. We follow the guidance of outside agencies and professionals for specific targets they have set for a particular child.

Links we have to other agencies

We liaise with any outside agency as required, including speech and language therapists, the senior locality senco and other professionals from the Inclusion team in Cornwall. We can advice Parents who may be the best person to support them for specific concerns they have.

How we support children transferring to school

We work with the local schools by inviting the reception class teachers to visit us, and when possible we take the children to the schools for a taster session. We feed into a variety of schools, and transitions between the Early Years and St Petroc's reception class is usually very strong, with lots of time spent in the reception class room in the summer term, and visits from the reception teacher.

Welfare

Specialist skills or training our staff have

The Senco and one other staff member have attended the Senco Induction training, and most of the staff have done training for visual supports. The Senco and three other staff have attended numerous speech and language training, including Learning Language and Loving it. Majority of the staff have had basic training in Makaton. The majority of staff are qualified to Level three. Some staff are qualified to a level 4 or above.  Some staff have attended behaviour management training, and all staff have done basic safeguarding training.

Support we offer regarding children's health and well-being

The Head of Early Years is the designated Safeguarding officer, in partnership with the reception class teacher, although a majority of staff have undertaken basic safeguarding training. When a child and parent attends their taster sessions we can discuss any health and well being issues surrounding your child, and can then make sure we have the correct equipment or training to deal with the specific needs of your child. Many of the staff have carried out two year old checks, as part of their role of being a Key Person, and this give both parent and Key Person a chance to discuss your child's development. The Key Person system enables parents to have a point of contact in the nursery besides the manager who they can go to for advice or to share information about their child. This could include things such as moving house or a new sibling. To ensure our setting is safe, we carry out risk assessments on every room of the setting which then get reviewed every six months. When we go on an outing, we also do a risk assessment of the venue to ensure it is safe and all staff are aware of any risks there may be.The manager is confident in contacting the Early Years inclusion team when required.

Ways we inform parents about how their child is being supported

At the end of each term, every Sea Lion and Little Turtle child has a report written about them based on the three prime areas. The Dolphins focus on all 7 areas of learning. We are now using Tapestry, which is an online Learning Journey which can be accessed by parents daily.  In our Sea Lions and Dolphins room we have set up a wow board, this gives you the opportunity to share with us any amazing news or a new interest your child has shown. It is made up of photos or information about a new interest or special event regarding your child. Newsletters are sent out via e-mail weekly, although we also display them for those parents who do not have access to the internet.

Our complaints policy

The setting has a complaints policy for parents to raise concerns or make a complaint. It will be thoroughly investigated and recorded and the parents will get copies of the process. We also display the Ofsted information in the entrance hall if parents wish to complain to Ofsted, as well as to ISA.

Access

Alterations we have made to make our building accessible

In our Sea Lions and Dolphins room, we have access for walking frames and wheelchairs, with wide door frames to accommodate all parents and children. There is also an accessible toilet as the building is situated on ground floor. We can access specialist equipment with help from the inclusion team, as and when needed which we would discuss before a child starts with us. The  changing area in the Little Turtles is in the corner of the room, and in the Sea Lions and Dolphins is in the bathroom area. There are clearly labelled fire exit signs.

Facilities we have for personal care

Our Little Turtles has a changing area located within the main room in the corner, In the Sea Lions and Dolphins room we use the toilet cubicles for a private area for changing children, although a majority of children at this age are toilet training or in pants. All staff are DBS checked before starting in the setting. We have a Key Person system in place, where each staff is responsible for a small group of children. Both Sea Lions and Dolphins have a visual sequencing strip for the hand washing routine. If we needed to, we would receive specific training to meet a child's needs, for example learning how to administer a tube feed. On arrival, Dolphins children are encouraged and supported to post their names and talk about their feelings, selecting a happy or sad face.

Specialist resources we have

We do not currently have any specialist equipment stored within the setting, but would be able to access certain equipment through the inclusion team.

How we include all children in activities, such as trips

Before going on any trips outside of the nursery setting, we carry out a thorough risk assessment to identify any potential risks, and what action may need to be put in place. Staff members would be allocated a small group of children to which they are responsible for whilst on their trip, although all staff will be supervising at all times. In the past we have been on trips to the Library, Fire station and Sainsburys!
