Skylar
Services and organisations that have the Local Offer flash have filled out inclusion information, meaning that they meet the needs of people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)

Skylar nursery is the latest development of Trelya youth and community project.  The Skylar project has evolved out of our family work - and enables children to start their Trelya involvement from an earlier age, and gives families access to extra support, help, advocacy and expertise if they need it. There is a strong emphasis on children's personal, social and emotional development. Skylar takes referrals from other services such as Social Care, Health Visiting and Portage.

Early Years Local Offer response

Learning and development

Systems and strategies we have in place to identify children that may require additional support

All staff are careful to observe and monitor the progress of every child's learning and development, keeping a record of their learning journey and including parents' views.  Each child is assigned a key person who is responsible for ensuring that they are happy and settled during the session and tracks their development in relation to the EYFS.  Additional tools such as ECAT and the Developmental Journal are used to further assess children's needs when necessary. Close links with Health Visitors provide opportunities to complete joint reviews and two year checks. Any potential concerns are identified early which the key person discusses with the SENCo as soon as possible. This information is shared with the parent and carer and, with their permission, the child is placed on our register of need if necessary.

Including the parent and carers views and sharing information with them is a priority for Skylar. Regular team meetings are held for the whole team to review children's progress and effectiveness of individual support plans.  Weekly safeguarding meetings with the staff team ensure that early interventions are put in place and the needs of the family are reviewed regularly.  Skylar works closely with other agencies including Social Care, the Health Visiting team, Portage, Early Years Service and Speech Therapists to provide support for families as necessary.

How we identify and support children's learning and development needs

Our SEND policy is shared with and followed by all staff.  This outlines the graduated approach we follow using the assess, plan, do, review model in line with the SEN Code of Practice. Skylar has a highly experienced and skilled team of staff who regularly take part in training to support a wide range of issues that may affect our families.  This includes emotional and behavioural responses, speech and language acquisition, attachment disorders and perinatal and infant mental health. We use Makaton and visual supports in our everyday practice and identify individual goals for children who have an IEP. We also follow specific targets set by outside professionals such as the Area SENCo and Speech Therapist.

All children and families attending Skylar benefit from an individualised package of support based on the needs of both child and family. Skylar has continual access to services provided by the registered charity, Trelya, including a dedicated family support worker and experienced safeguarding team. Support required is identified on or before entry and monitored continually to ensure that an individualised and appropriate level of support is maintained. Skylar has a close relationship with the Health Visiting team and benefits from regular advice sessions to support staff and families.

Links we have to other agencies

Skylar is situated in the Lescudjack Centre and is committed to working with other agencies.  We currently have links with the dentist and we continue to build closer links with other services in the community.  We work closely with Family Support workers, Portage, Health Visitors, Social Workers, Speech Therapists, Area SENCo, specialist teachers, a music teacher and a Music Therapist.

How we support children transferring to school

Each child has their own transition plan and transition links start early in the academic year where possible, to ensure important, positive relationships are established for children and families with their future school. With the permission of the parents, information is shared with the new school. We invite the class teacher into Skylar and arrange visits for children to visit their new school. We prepare children for their new school through activities such as looking at books, visiting school websites, making new school books and social stories. We introduce the child to the schools phonics programme and practice things such as putting on a PE kit and carrying a tray of food at lunchtime. During the reception year, our children may be offered a worker from Trelya to continue to support them as they move through school. Strong links are established with local schools to enable this partnership.

Welfare

Specialist skills or training our staff have

All staff have paediatric first aid and safeguarding and Child Protection training. We specialise in supporting children with emotional and behavioural difficulties, attachment disorder and perinatal and infant mental health which is reflected in our staff training. Makaton training is also provided for all staff with some staff having further training in ELKLAN (language and learning) and PECS.

Support we offer regarding children's health and well-being

Skylar has links with the on site dentist and staff will support parents and children with attending appointments. Close links are formed with the Health Visitors for two year old checks to be completed alongside the relevant key person.  The Health Visiting team regularly join Skylar's safeguarding meetings and provide advice to parents and carers in individual sessions around healthy eating, toileting and sleep routines.  The parent information board and Skylar newsletter often focus on health and well-being. We also hold family events and send home learning packs to support these themes.

The Manager and Deputy manager are Skylar's designated safeguarding officers and we carry out risk assessments for trips and activities as necessary. Both Moonlight and Sunshine Rooms have designated quiet spaces and use specific approaches to support children's emotional well being including a music therapist and music teacher who visit us once a week. We encourage parents and carers to talk to us about anything that may be occurring at home, we are keen to offer a quick response with additional support when needed.

Ways we inform parents about how their child is being supported

Staff provide parents and carers with a daily update regarding their child's wellbeing, progress and any additional support.  We also invite parents and carers in for learning reviews when possible and update parents and carers over the phone as necessary. We value parents and carers views and actively encourage them to contribute their feedback in meetings.

Prior to entry and on entry, parents and carers are already establishing a close relationship with the Trelya and Skylar team. Daily chats at pick up and drop off as well as more formal conversations and events are integral to how the setting supports a range of needs and works meaningfully with families.

Regular stay and play sessions enable families to see their child in a group setting and to sample a range of home learning activities which are then sent home as learning packs. We send home newsletters and recourses such as 'chatter bags' for parents and carers to use and keep at home.

Our complaints policy

Parents are made aware of the complaints procedure and encouraged to voice concerns at the earliest opportunity.  Ofsted guidance on complaints is displayed.  We work hard to build confident relationships so parents feel empowered to raise concerns with any member of the team.

Access

Alterations we have made to make our building accessible

Skylar is on the ground floor with step free access. We are currently hoping to extend our outdoor provision so that we can offer more places.

Facilities we have for personal care

There are two private changing areas and a laundry room so clothes can be returned to families in a clean condition. Building works are planned to improve children's toilet facilities and baby changing area.

Specialist resources we have

There is an emphasis on providing tactile and sensory toys, especially in the baby room. We have a sensory spaces which include a variety of SEN and sensory resources.  We also have a designated room for Speech and Language support. One member of the team has recently completed Elklan Speech Therapy training and works with children on SEN support in achieving their Speech therapy targets. Children have access to regular sessions in our large onsite gym including a climbing wall and gymnastics sessions.  A qualified music teacher supports small groups and individuals with bespoke music sessions and we are supported by a Music Therapist who provides weekly sessions for individual children.  One member of staff has completed Level 3 Forest School training and, as part of Skylar expansion, we plan to develop a forest school as a core part of our nursery provision.

How we include all children in activities, such as trips

Risk assessments are carried out to ensure all children can safely access all activities.  There is a high ratio of adults to children.  Skylar is open throughout most school holidays. when our programme offers regular trips to local attractions planned for the particular needs of different groups so all children can enjoy trips out when permitted.
