Family Learning
Services and organisations that have the Local Offer flash have filled out inclusion information, meaning that they meet the needs of people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)

Family Learning is part of Cornwall Council's Adult Education Service.

  • Delivers free short courses to families in schools, children's centres, community venues and online.
  • Helps parents and carers to be more active in their children's learning and understand the impact of their support.
  • Offers parents and carers activities to enable them to support their child's learning and brush up their own skills with the result that families enjoy learning together.

Inclusion details

How we make our service inclusive

Access for all families is assured. Tutors are all highly trained and aware of additional needs requirements. Skilled in supporting learners with learning support needs and physical support needs.

Staff SEND experience

Dyslexia, dyscalculia, dyspraxia.

We also work with the hearing support service and EAL (English as an additional language) families, Early Help teams and Cornwall Young Carers.

How our service supports providers / schools / colleges

We share our achievement data and progression information where possible. We work in partnership with other education providers to give the best educational support possible to the families in Cornwall.

Some of our longer courses are delivered in partnership with a school teacher, giving those families the best possible support to for both the children and adults.

Support at key transition points

Many of our courses are specifically designed to ease the transition for families when their child is about to go to primary school or secondary school.

Ready For School and Transition to Secondary.

Equally our Playing with Language and Playing with Numbers courses support the families as their children begin to use verbal communication and learn simple counting tasks.

Other local or national support

We are part of the National Family Learning network, managed by the Campaign for Learning. Their website holds many resources available to all.

As part of Cornwall Adult Education Service we offer further support to those adults who wish to continue with their education and achieve qualifications in a range of subjects [last year approx 24% of our adult learners went on to enrol on to a further course with Adult Education].

Resolving disagreements, mediation and making complaints

All learners are made aware of our learner charter and our safeguarding procedures.

All tutors are trained in identifying potential safeguarding issues and would follow the Cornwall Council procedure and alert the safeguarding champion in our serivce.

At the end of all of our courses all learners are given an evaluation where they can make comments - these are returned in a sealed envelope and reviewed by a senior manager who would respond as necessary following Cornwall Council procedures.
