Early Years Local Offer response
- Systems and strategies we have in place to identify children that may require additional support
Upon entry parents share information about their child’s needs and abilities. We require you to provide your child's 'Red Book' to share information about your child's development from birth and the name of your Health visitor. We require you to complete an ‘All About Me’ sheet, sharing for example your child's likes and dislikes, special words, comforters, favourable toys and activities etc.
Children attend an induction session(s) where they play and meet their keyworker. An entry baseline assessment is completed in their first week.
Two year old checks are completed to share with your Health visitor at their two year old check.
We work closely with parent's and carers to support children with an identified delay and use a selection of resources to provide the best possible outcomes. These include Individual Education Plans to record and monitor individual children’s progress, Every Child a Talker (Ecat) monitoring sheets, and regular ongoing observations and assessments linked to the 'development journal' and the revised 'EYFS Development Matters', .
When a child’s progress is not as expected and may require extra support, with parental permission we seek support from the Early Years Inclusion team, Speech and language Therapists, Health Visitors and/or Child Paediatrician.
- How we identify and support children's learning and development needs
Every child has a Keyworker who observes each child during spontaneous play and planned activities to identify children’s interest, needs and development.
Keyworkers support each child's progress by using the Revised Development Matters, and prepare the environment to facilitate independent choices/interests.
We continue to use Learning Journey books shared with each child and family to record their time in nursery.
A Two Year old progress check is completed for every child between age 2 and 3yrs to share with their health visitor at their two year health check.
When a child is showing signs of a delay in their development a range of monitoring tools may be used to support their developmental needs- Individual Learning Plan, Every Child A Talker monitoring tool, a Development Journal.
When intervention is required by outside agencies we follow the guidelines to support the child, monitor and review progress to help close the gap in preparation for the child's transition into school.
- Links we have to other agencies
We work closely with all multi-agencies via the Early Help Hub: the Senior Locality SENCO, Early Years Inclusion Team, Speech and Language Therapists, Occupation Therapists, Social Communication Worker, Vision Support, Educational Psychologists, Community Paediatrician, Penwith Child Development Centre (PCDC) Teachers and Health Visitors.
We are happy to make referrals for Parents wishing to attend Parenting courses, Incredible Years 3-5 or any additional service Parents feel may benefit their family.
- How we support children transferring to school
Having identified where each child is attending school we invite reception teachers to our setting to meet the children.
Children attend transition sessions to the school reception class in the summer term, along with play and stay sessions.
When a child has SEN support transition visits are arranged via a Team around the child (TAC) meeting with the local school teachers and other professionals involved to help children build familiar relationships with their new teachers and ensure all relevant support is provided.
Parents may share their child's Learning Journey including a summary of current stages of development with their new reception teacher.
Learning and development
- Specialist skills or training our staff have
All staff are Paediatric First Aid trained and attend Safeguarding training to the correct level for their responsibility.
SENCo Induction training and regular SENCo Network meetings are attended to maintain up-to-date information/records.
Every Child a Talker (ECAT), Attachment, Equal Opportunities, Behaviour that Challenges, Social and Emotional Development , Visual Support and Makaton training.
- Support we offer regarding children's health and well-being
Individual Child Requirements are recorded to meet all children’s needs.
Children have access to a cafe style snack- making their own healthy food and drink choices of which they select, carry and eat their snack with friends- washing up afterwards.
A quiet place is provided for children to rest.
Indoor/Outdoor play - By following the Montessori ethos of 'freedom of choice', 'freedom of movement' children are fulfilling individual emotional and physical needs on a daily basis. We use a range of visual tools to support children with their emotional and well-being including visual emotional boards, 'A Box Full Of Feelings' (by Professor Ferre Leaven) supporting children to identify their feelings and help with social interactions.
- Ways we inform parents about how their child is being supported
Keyworkers are always available for daily informed chats and concerns about a child’s health and well-being, offering guidance and advice/ liaising with Health visitors where necessary. Information on healthy eating is displayed, with guidance from the Healthy Under 5's. Newsletters and Learning Journeys are used to share development and interests. Staff/parent concerns are always discussed with confidentiality.
Staff are happy to chat during drop off or collection of children. If parents need more time to discuss their child we are happy to arrange a confidential/mutual time before/after children are collected.
- Our complaints policy
We have a Complaints and Suggestions policy available at all times in the policy folder in the cloakroom, to encourage parents to voice any ideas or concerns they may have. Our Ofsted Complaints poster is displayed on our Parents Notice Board.
Welfare
- Alterations we have made to make our building accessible
The nursery building and garden is fully accessible for all children and wheelchair users, with an accessible toilet. Visual support signs are used to label fire exits, stop signs on restricted areas.
- Facilities we have for personal care
Separate child toilets with child height sinks, soap and paper towels dispensers. Accessible toilet with sink and hand dryer. Nappy changing area and sleep area.
All areas have visible makaton sequenced strips to support children with routines in self care.
- Specialist resources we have
Montessori didactic materials support all children according to their level of development and learning ability across each area of the Early Years Foundation Stage.
All activities are freely accessible on child-sized shelves to help children become independent learners. Children may explore the world around them by playing with activities and materials that are tactile and help refine each of the senses. The activities support children to maintain focus and have a built in control of error to help build confidence and a sense of satisfaction and achievement.
- How we include all children in activities, such as trips
Increase adult/child ratios by providing extra staff and parents. Provide one to one support for children with additional needs.
