Early Birds nursery is a purpose-built nursery at the heart of the Bude community. Our nursery is nestled between the Family Hub, Bude infants and Juniors.  We are registered with Ofsted to provide quality early years care and education for children aged 3 months – 5 years.

We provide a safe, nurturing and stimulating environment, which provides a perfect start for your child’s learning journey. The team have extensive experience and qualifications. The manager is an Early Years Teacher and Forest School Leader. The team are well established and have developed a pedagogy with the voice of the child at the heart of the progressive care and education we provide. Our nursery environments evolve with the needs of the children. In line with the communication friendly approach to learning environments, with a dynamic and reflective culture of aspirations. We are currently further developing the garden to host Forest School and beach school activities for all.

Learning and development

Systems and strategies we have in place to identify children that may require additional support

During your child's induction session we work with the parents to create an "All about me" profile to gather information on any individual needs the child has and a better understanding of their current level of development.

Throughout your child's time with us their key person completes a secure Learning Journey on the 'Famly App'. This  comprises of a baseline assessment regular observations, photos, parent contributions summative assessments. This enables us to reflect on the development of each child to ensure they are making progress. We work with the Birth to five curriculum  in order to know where each child should be developing according to their age. This helps us identify any areas of delay and make appropriate actions to support the child in that particular area of learning.

If we had concerns about a child's development, at first instance we would discuss these with you as parents & carers in order for us to work together. If needed and agreed with you, we can make referrals to receive additional support in areas of expertise e.g. speech & language.

Any SEND requirements supported by a detailed system of assess, plan, do review which is carried out by the Key Persons and overlooked by the senior management ensures that children that may require support are identified early.  A wealth of information is gathered from parents during settling in sessions that in turn informs our baseline assessments of the children.  Two Year Checks are carried out and any concerns are discussed with the SENCo.  ECAT forms are used to assess children's speech and language.

How we identify and support children's learning and development needs

Staff talk to  children and parents to ensure that they have a secure knowledge of each child's development. Observations are undertaken, during individual learning time/continuous provision and within group work. A combination of all of these allows staff to complete termly progress reports which help to identify areas of progress and those areas that may need a little support. Should a child need extra support, this will be done during their play based learning in a way that suits that child's learning. Characteristics of effective learning are monitored to further support staff from gaining an understand of how and what the children are learning. Our setting implements ECAT monitoring forms to ensure that children are developing their speech as expected, it also allows us to plan for interventions and referrals should they be needed.

Our SENCO's have attended specific training on Behaviour, Sensory and attachment training. The team regularly attend   attended positive behaviour training. We have in place visual supports such as visual timetable and spot timers.

Staff attend Makaton training, sensory training and visual training.

We work closely with outside professions such as, SLT and the SENCO team and follow agreed targets for children to achieve. The SENCo has been part of CAFs and has attended regular TAC meetings.

Links we have to other agencies

We work closely with other nursery's in the Early Years Alliance, sharing practice and ideas. We also have strong links with Bude Primary Academy, which aid us in supporting the children's transition to school. The nursery also works with the Senior Locality SENCo, Inclusion worker and other professionals where needed in Cornwall

We work closely with our local Family Hub, Inclusion workers, Speech and Language team, Senior Locality SENCO, Teacher of the deaf and Visual impairment team. We also have knowledge of other support agencies and how to contact them should the need arise.

When a child attends dual settings, we ensure welfare and progress is tracked to ensure the best outcomes are monitored.

How we support children transferring to school

We work closely with all school in the area, to ensure that transition is as seamless as possible. We host transition sessions, this allows the children to familiarise themselves with the staff and other children. Each aspect of school life and routine is experienced before the children move up to school.

The nursery operates from Bude Primary Federation therefore we work closely with the school to ensure children have the best possible transition and are ready for school when they start. We support children to visit the school and teachers visit children in the nursery environment.  Each child's key person will also complete a transfer document summarizing the children's learning accross the Early Years Foundation Stage. We will work closely with you in preparing this document to ensure it is accurate and individual to each child.

This continues after the children progress to school, ensuring communications and support continues when needed. It also allows the new children to meet the school but it also gives the reception class a chance to see the Nursery staff and old friends.

Children who may move on to other schools will have their new class teacher invited in to observe the child/ren in their environment and to talk to the child's Key Person. Each child will pass their learning journey onto their new teacher to share their learning experiences so far, this will include a transfer document to pass on assessments for each area of learning.

Welfare

Specialist skills or training our staff have

All staff receive regular safeguarding training and the management team attends a more intensive Multi Agency Safeguarding training.

All staff are Paediatric First Aid trained

The Special Educational Needs Coordinator attends regular training to keep skills and knowledge up to date

The manager has Early Years Teacher Status and a degree in Early Years.

The manager is a Level Tree Forest School Leader.

The team continually attend new training and conferences to update their knowledge of chid-centred practice.

Support we offer regarding children's health and well-being

All staff have up-to-date safeguarding training. All staff have enhanced DBS checks. Risk assessments are regularly reviewed and updated if necessary. We have in place a key person system so that parent/carers build a relationship with their child's carer. Small group work is an integral part of our daily routine. Parents are encouraged to discuss any concerns they have at arrivals or departures. We regularly attend "Team around the child" meetings and work with outside agencies to ensure the health and well-being of the child.

We ensure that we take all possible measures to provide a safe, secure and stimulating environment for the children within our care. Risk assessments are carried out to help prevent possible injuries occurring inside and outside. Risk assessments are regularly assessed and updated. The Nursery is set up in a way that ensure that there is a quiet area for children both in the inside and outside environment. We have researched communication friendly spaces and try to create a calm environment that allows the children to engage and learn without becoming over stimulated.

Every child has an assigned key person from the induction session, to develop a secure attachment and to communicate with parents, this relationship is central to the key person system. Two year checks are done during the spring term and these checks are written up and shared with the parents. Parents are then able to contribute to them and help to set targets, should their children need any extra support or nourishment in any area of learning. We work at creating an environment that also allows parents to feel that they are able to come and discuss concerns, apprehensions, changes of circumstances etc with us. We hold an open door policy that allows parents to share any circumstances with us from home that may have an impact on their children here. We work together with parents to ensure that any change of circumstance is supported here, and that information is shared between the child's parents and key person regularly. All staff have undergone safeguarding training and this is regularly refreshed and updated. Our designated person is Rachel Fasham, Nursery Manager.

Ways we inform parents about how their child is being supported

We have an open door policy, parents are encouraged to talk to all staff and view the child's learning journey when ever they wish.

We have started to use the 'Famly ap', for parent/carer communication, invoicing and digital Learning Journeys. All feedback is very positive, Parent receive all up to date information though this format. Your child's key person completes regular observations on children, taking into account what they are showing interest in and how this supports the children in their learning and development. Parents can interact with the nursery software system and view their child's learning & development from home at any time. This helps us work closely with parents & carers in creating a collaborative approach to children's assessment and progress. Parents are also able to see the 'next steps' we are working on with children and may contribute to these from home.

Each Term we hold a Parent's Evening where you can enjoy an allocated time slot with your child's key person and discuss all the lovely things your child can do.

We give feedback at the end of every session and daily diary's are available for younger children.

We post appropriate updates the Famly App and on our Facebook page to demonstrate the activities that have been experienced.

Regular news letters give a detailed insight of learning development and events.

Termly consultations provide documented detailed feedback of all areas  of learning, development and welfare. to source feedback are fed into parent forum gatherings to consult on improvements and feedback. We have robust comments, concerns and complaints procedures to ensure feedback is gathered from parents.

Parents are given free access to all our core policies and procedures and a notice board provides further updates.

Access

Alterations we have made to make our building accessible

The building is purpose built therefore it has excellent access on entering and throughout all of the rooms. There are no steps on uneven surfaces on the inside of the nursery. The garden and woodland beyond is fully accessible.

Facilities we have for personal care

We have a nappy changing unit situated in our 0-2's room. We also have a children's bathroom with two children's toilets.

There are two private toilets within the Preschool for the children to go independently. A potty is also fully accessible if a child is potty training. There is a nappy station which is partitioned to allow for discreet changing. We are happy to support parents and children with potty training.

We fully understand and support that children have differing levels of self care and are here to support their individual needs. There is a space within the toilet area that is available for changing of clothes too.

Specialist resources we have

Well qualified and experienced staff.
Furniture that is at the appropriate height and size for all ages.
High quality toys and resources.
Access to a purpose built garden
A separate secure garden for the under twos.

We use our knowledge of the children's interests and termly assessments to inform us of resources we need to buy in order to enhance our learning environment. For example, we identified from our most recent termly assessment on children than 'Maths' was an area of weakness for all children therefore purchased resources to support children in their learning in this area.

How we include all children in activities, such as trips

All activities are adapted to meet the needs of the individual.
Planning and Continuous Provision is always based around individual needs.
Free flow, easy access to the garden.
An extensive risk assessment is carried out on all locations for trips.

Forest School sessions with enhanced ratios.

Risk assessments are carried out before going on any trip or outing.
