Raising the Participation Age

Your future is changing......make it happen!

  • From 2013 it will be a legal requirement for all young people to remain in some form of learning or training up to 17 years old.
  • From 2015 young people will be required to remain in learning or training up to 18 years old.

What does this mean?

  • Young people born on or after the 1 September 1996 will be amongst the first to be  required to continue in education or training beyond 16.
  • Young people who complete year 11 in 2013 must continue learning until July 2014.
  • Young people who complete year 11 in or after 2014 will continue learning at least until their 18th birthday.

Raising the Participation Age (RPA) is the Government’s policy which sets out the requirement for young people to continue in learning or training after the age of 16.  

RPA does not necessarily mean staying in school; you can choose where and how to continue your learning and/or training.
