Transition top tips: Considerations for a successful Transition

Considerations for a successful Transition - parents/carers

  • Visit possible new schools with your child before deciding that is where you would like your child to go.

  • Make sure that you have a named contact at the new school so that you can discuss any worries.

  • Update the new school on any changes at home.

  • Use a calendar with your child as a countdown to starting at their new school.

  • Visit the new school during the summer holidays (if possible) and practice the journey to school with your child.

  • Familiarise your child with their new uniform, school bag etc.

  • Ask the new school for a copy of their planner/homework diary etc. so that your child can practice using it over the summer holidays.

  • Set a routine with your child for meeting homework deadlines – plot them onto the calendar and work towards them together to start with.

  • Most schools and colleges have transition documents/information on their websites that you can download or look at online.
