Parenting Programmes

Parenting programmes are courses/groups that support you with some of the challenges of being a parent. Parents tell us that they learn a great deal from each other and enjoy the support that a group provides. We offer a selection of free courses, whatever the age or needs of your child.

Pre Birth (Antenatal)

Bump to Baby Antenatal

This three-week course at your local Family Hub provides parents-to-be with all the information and skills they need to feel confident about making the right choices for their new baby.

Topics include:

  • Having a healthy baby
  • Preparation for parenthood, birth and beyond
  • Communicating with your bump and baby
  • Changes in relationships
  • Getting your baby off to the best possible start
  • How babies grow and develop

Delivered by Midwives, Health Visitors and Family Hub staff.

Parent/Carer of Child Aged 0 - 11 Months

Baby and Me

Six 1-hour sessions for parents and their baby under 12 months to support parents to get to know their baby, meet other parents, learn about babies' development and the chance to join in rhyme time and activities such as baby massage.

For parents and their babies ages 0 - 11 months.

Sessions include:

  • Getting to know your baby
  • Babies as intelligent learners
  • Providing physical, tactile and visual stimulation
  • Parents learning to read babies' minds

Parent/Carer of Child Aged 1 - 3 Years

Being Passionate about the Early Years

A 4.5-hour workshop for Parents / Carers of children aged 1 to 3 years (pre-reception).

Sessions Include:

  • Top tips and strategies to support behaviour
  • To build positive relationships with our toddlers
  • Developing routines, child-led play, special time and praise
  • To give support and confidence to parents and carers

Delivered over 3 sessions (1.5 hours per session)

Parent/Carer of Child Aged 4 - 11 Years

Being Passionate about Parenting

A 6-hour workshop for Parents / Carers of young people aged 4 to 11 years (primary up to year 6). It is an introduction to some top tips and strategies and incorporates golden threads from our other Parenting programs. It is an introduction to positive behaviour management that often gives those who attend confidence to engage with other support on offer.


Being Passionate about Parenting with an basic introduction to ADHD

A 6-hour workshop for Parents / Carers of young people aged 4 to 11 years (primary up to year 6). It is an introduction to some top tips and strategies and incorporates golden threads from our other Parenting programs. It is an introduction to positive behaviour management that often gives those who attend confidence to engage with other support on offer. The ADHD element of the workshop includes: Fact and Fiction about ADHD, definition of ADHD and possible areas that may be a challenge, the use of language and effective communication, seeing behaviours from your young person’s perspective and supporting them with practical strategies and top tips


Being Passionate about Parenting with an basic introduction to the Spectrum

A 6.5-hour workshop for Parents / Carers of young people aged 4 to 11 years (primary up to year 6). It is an introduction to some top tips and strategies and incorporates golden threads from our other Parenting programs. It is an introduction to positive behaviour management that often gives those who attend confidence to engage with other support on offer. The elements which are about the Spectrum includes: Fact and Fiction about the Spectrum, looking at definitions/challenges and strategies to support your young person, sensory challenges, basic social scripts to support situations that may be difficult to understand, the use of language to support positive communication, and to understand behaviours from your young person’s point of view.


Incredible Years (3 - 5 Years)

For parents of 3 to 5-year-olds

Passionate about ADHD (5 - 11 Years)

Passionate about ADHD Workshop.

Sessions include:

  • To have a better understanding of ADHD and it effects on a young person
  • To enable parents/carers to understand their child's behaviour
  • To increase your confidence in your parenting skills and abilities.
  • To enhance the relationship between parent and child
  • To develop skills for helping to raise children's self - esteem
  • To work out the best way to effectively discipline your child
  • To give tools for the extended family and network to provide consistency of strategies and approach
  • To give the opportunity to discuss treatment options in a safe environment, based on fact.

Being Passionate About the Spectrum (5-11 Years)

Parent/Carer of Child Aged 12 - 17 Years

Living With Parents

Living with Parents is an evidence based one day workshop for parents/carers with their young people aged 13-17 years.

The aim is to improve communication and relationships and reduce conflict within the home. Both parents/carers and their young people undertake a range of activities in large groups, small groups and pairs including:

  • Interactive activities
  • Structured activities
  • Guided discussion
  • Strategies and top tips
  • Discussing effective communication
  • Relationship building
  • Boundary setting

Passionate about the Teenage Brain

A 6-hour workshop for Parents / Carers of young people aged 12 to 17 (Secondary years 7 to 11). It is an introduction to strategies and incorporates golden threads from our other Parenting programs. The aims of the workshop include: - To build relationships with our young people. To develop positive strategies to support behaviour management. To provide support, information and confidence to Parents/ Carers. Topics in this workshop include: -Boundaries and communication, emotions, keeping calm, praise, the teenage brain, parenting styles etc. This workshop is delivered on a need led basis.


Take 3 - Online Version

A 10 hours workshop (5 x 2-hour sessions) for parents and carers of teenagers.

Whether you have current worries about your teenager or would just like to understand your child better, this programme will have something for you. How to encourage, motivate and support young people. Helping parents look after themselves. How to negotiate boundaries that work.


Take 3

Take 3 is an evidence based course for parents of young people aged between 12 and 17. Part one is a basic course of 10 “core” units, and part 2 has 10 optional sessions focusing on specific issues. The “Three” of the title refers to the three vital elements of effective parenting:

  • Nurture
  • Structure
  • Self Care

It also refers to breathing techniques that the course teaches to help a parent stay calm in stressful situations.

Sessions Covered

  • Introductions – why are we all here?
  • What’s adolescence?
  • Encouraging young people
  • The power of listening
  • Misbehaviour and listening
  • The four styles of parenting
  • Taking stock, “I” statements and boundaries
  • Negotiating boundaries and consequences
  • When adults disagree -  more negotiation practice
  • Saying goodbye and moving on

Additional sessions can be added according to parents needs, and include specific topics like talking about drugs and alcohol, step families, sex and relationships.

Behaviours that Challenge

Do you find your child's behaviour difficult to manage? Would some friendly support and advice be helpful?

If you would like to be able to talk in confidence and meet other parents experiencing similar challenges, then do come along. Your child does not need to have a diagnosis or statement for you to attend this group.
